Well, its a pretty weird scenario as far as my case is concerned...
I try to hide my interests about Beyblade (and Pokemon too) from my friends for as long as possible.
For those who know of my hobby, they find me too mature for my age, and shudder at the thought of me playing a game meant for "kids". They probably expect me to be a bit more sensible, and use my free time more constructively, hah!
The "Haters Gonna Hate" attitude doesn't work for me, unfortunately. If I have someone hating me, I can't stand it. I try to please people who are angry with me, so that they do not hate me.
To do this, I have frequently resorted to giving out certain foolish excuses. However, they have worked for me pretty well. What hurts me though, is that I
actually had to resort to such excuses, which destroy the actual aura of this beautiful game...
Considering that humans(or at least a few of my friends) are mostly materialistic, or obsessed with studies; these two statements have made beyblade more than just a game for them (and even for me in front of them)-
1. Beyblade are amazing collectibles and have a HIGH collective value.
To support this statement, I always have a Dragoon MS ebay listing bookmarked on my PC or Phone. I show it to them, and they suddenly start respecting the hobby...
2. Beyblade involves a lot of Physics.
To support this statement, I usually give them a demonstration about how different parts work differently, and how the various laws of Physics affect beyblade; making it more than just a spinning top...
While these excuses work for me in front of a few friends, sometimes they don't.
I completely agree with Just That Guy, who says that people usually find a chance to insult others to uplift their own status. Unfortunately though, this technique is highly effective; and it takes a long time to resurrect your reputation (if you care to do it, that is). And if all this happens in front of a girl, I DIE of embarrassment...
The best part is when such friends actually accompany you home, enjoy a Beyblade match or two, and leave with a rather jolly look. This happens rarely, but well, it happened once in my case; where one of these guys was SO impressed with the game, that he actually wanted me to purchase a bey for him.
Talking about purchases, that too is a funny affair. I have NEVER let the shopkeeper or the cashier at a supermarket know that I am purchasing the bey for myself. In such cases, I usually tend to act like a guy buying a birthday present for his "so-called" brother. I do it by raising questions on a metal spinning top's safety, and the meaning of the words- Attack, Defense etc. printed on the side of the box. I do not know if I actually succeed in deceiving the shopkeeper into believing my story, but well, it might be good!
Coming back to friends, I am fortunate to have my best friends have no problem with my hobby!
Referring to what Brad said- My best friends do not care about what I do in my free time; and that is exactly why they are my best friends!
