General Writing Thread

To discuss writing in general, whether it be asking for advice on a chapter your about to post, asking for tips or strategies, telling what you do to cure writers block, etc.

Yeah, got this idea from the General GFX thread. No copywrite intended Wink

I took the mary-sue test the other day, and got a 3. It was a long test, but here's a link to it:

He was inspired by me. So proud of leself. Smile
I took it and got 22. Meh, cliche with the larger twist.
My characters' results (I only did my main protagonists). You guys might not know them, but still, you'll see that they are balanced.

Kyo (Beyblade: Redemption) - 5
Crane (Elephant Strife) - 4
Viper (Elephant Strife) - 0 what the hell?
Grant (Codename: ALPHA BLOOD) - 10 Unhappy

I'll post the rest later Smile

Wow, nice score! I think you scored better than Temporal Wink

@Taiwo Seigi...aha, you need some work...
As long as it's not too cliche, I'm good. I gives it a recognizable feel to it, but not too much. But I could always improve.
I just took it and got an 18 for Kiernan in my Lost in Darkness story, which I think is good for me because my characters usually suck. I still have to work some things out for him though, since I'm not really sure about some things for him. I keep getting ideas for it, but sometimes they contradict themselves. Time to get working on the rest of my characters...

EDIT: Just did the test for Patrick and either got a 7 or a 12. I'm not sure if having powers (power over earth in his case) but he doesn't gain them in the story is a yes to this question, "Does your character become a genetically, scientifically, cybernetically, or magically altered/enhanced being, possibly with new powers?" The word "become" threw me off, since he had the powers before the story started, and he didn't gain them within the timeline of the story.
Haha! I took took the Mary-Sue test and:
Jet Sai- 4! (Spinning out of Control, Beyblade)
Leon Dunn- 6! (The Boom Boom Alchemist, FMA)

Didn't see that coming...
Yeah, some questions are quite confusing. Like, in the beginning of my story, the protagonist's mother is killed. But the question says, "Does the character have a depressing past?" Well, no, it's a depressing present.
Seth from my book that i am writing got a 10. I took me forever.
My character got 3. Grin
Made some adjustments to Chapter 1 of Beyblade VS Battle Strikers
Hah, I just noticed that I've never do e a 3rd
person perspective in a story. Would you guys say that's harder or easier? Think I wanna give it a shot...
I'm not a fan of 3rd person perspective. But you know what I want to try? Present tense. Looks interesting.
hey guys i need your help, i need people to get this link: http://worldbeyblade.org/Thread-New-stor...g-your-way and vote on it, so can people please put this in their signature? also nice idea for a thread, pretty clever idea.
Start by putting it in your own signature? Just a thought.

People say it's easier, but I'm not a fan of it.

It's a mary sue test. What is a mary sue? Just a person/character who is annoyingly amazing, can come back from the dead, is all around loved by every character, takes over as the main character, has had a terrible past, etc... Those are some examples.
The mary sue test? It's basically where you answer questions about a character in your story, and at the end of it, they give you your total score. The higher the score is, the more of a Mary Sue your character is.
If you want to know more about Mary Sue's, go here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Sue

I can tell you , in hong kong HKPNVE (a pokemon discus net)
There are sooooo many 3rd person writings,
so I don't think it will be very hard......?
Besides, one of my writing in the writing battle is in 3rd person.
All you have to know is the narrator knows everything, but don't explain too much.
Alright, then one more question: is there a way to be 1st person omniscient, as opposed to 3rd person omniscient?
I don't get it.
Mind describe it clearly?

Well, if your character is...God? I don't know, watching people through some sort of mystical force? Other than some supernatural way, I don't think so. Tongue_out
