I'm 15 and I'm a foot taller than you. Tongue_out_wink

I've been sick the past few days. I'm pretty sure it's just synesis though. I took some mucus pills, and something that gives you constipation for like 3 days or so, it slows your bowels down. But I woke up today feeling a lot better than I did yesterday. Sleeping really helped. At this rate, I should be better by tomorrow.

Most twelve year old males are taller than me, on average. The world is more convenient when you're smaller, though.

If it's sinus congestion, you might also want to take something to reduce nasal swelling, not just an expectorant. If you can take it, Advil Congestion Relief will work fine.
(Jan. 24, 2012  10:22 PM)Hazel Wrote: [ -> ]Izuma, if I recall correctly, you are pretty young - somewhere in the 12-15 range?

Males do not stop hitting growth spurts until 19-22. Also, there is literally nothing, short of HIDEOUSLY PAINFUL AND DANGEROUS SURGERY, that you can do to noticably augment height. I could detail the process of this surgery for you, but I can summarize it in one way: it's not covered by any known medical insurance, and it's tens of thousands of dollars - for four inches of height maximum.

I am 22 years old, and I have been 5'2" since I was thirteen. Sometimes, genetics just flips you the bird and rolls away on a scooter.

You're 5'2? Omj lmao that's so adorable. My girlfriend's 5'2 and she looks so fun-sized! You should wear some Nike Shox or something, they'll give you a couple inches on your height without anyone being able to tell. My shox make me pretty much 6ft tall, whereas my normal height is 5'10.
Well, I come from a family of shorter people, aside from a few exceptions who are outrageously tall. My fiancée is 4'11", so we make a cute little pair. I've dated folks up in the 5'11" range, and some things become awkward... like when people ask if you are her little sister.

I wear hiking boots, exclusively. Not the nasty yellowish ones - dark brown hikers with an elevated ankle support, plus some shoe inserts(for comfort, not height, lol - I used to work a retail job where I was on my feet all day).
cool Hazel, and yeah, just 12...... I love being small, makes Bball so much easier to slip thru people.....

sick with the cold.... and school, urgh
I think I might actually have one of the best metabolism in the world as I eat junk food at least 2-3 times a week and have been doing it since I was about 3. I only exercise when I play soccer which goes for about 4 or 5 months a year and that's it. Im only 5foot and weigh about 38 kg's, I'm 14 and have got 11.2 on the beep test last year. I'm also extremely fussy as the only meat I eat is from a cow. I have been checked iny a doctor and he has said I was a super taster which means I have more taste buds than an average human. When I'm not doing soccer I want to try basic exercises because I'm worried one day metabolism will not be as good as it is now. So does anyone recommend any excersices to do to keep me in shape? it's also weird because I already have a bit of a sixpack without doing any exercise!
The six-pack is mostly likely from being thin due to a high metabolic rate, not because of miracles w/o exercising.

Cow? I'm Hindu. Son I is disappoint. Hah, but seriously, try doing some basic exercises such as crunches and push-ups to build some muscles in the right areas and build endurance. Then do some weight training, and don't overlift. It would be best to figure out which area of your body you want to exercise first. Though you will inevitably have to work out every part to keep your body in good condition, finding out where you need the most work in would be good to start with. Plus, yoga works well as a good way to warm up and keep your muscles ready for doing such exercises, but again, don't overstretch or it'll hurt like hell later in the day and the next morning.

I don't give health advice too often, so correct me if I'm wrong. XD
Personally I would just jog or run once in a while. If you are worried about perhaps gaining weight eventually, then I am not certain that muscle training will really help that much ... Running, to me, keeps everything warmed up and "in shape", and muscle training is just for definition.
More muscle equates to more fat burn though.

I'd basically just say to eat more proper and get a weekly mix of exercises but supposedly that's a bad thing. I'd split the week into strength training, cardio (your sport), and some stretching or yoga like Ga'Hindu said. Build it around your sport schedule, and do about 2-3 strength training sessions per week, and body weight stuff is very functional for sports as well. You can do pushups, ab moves, pull ups and dips if you have access to enough equipment, and do different hand widths, etc. cardio will be sports and sport practice as I said, and for yoga, it'd probably be best to ask your coach or teammates for some stretches, otherwise maybe you know someone that knows yoga.

Agreed. If you want to stay in shape, as in low body fat, then cardio is simply the best way to go.

Swimming and running are the best options. You could try High Intensity Interval Training too, it's pretty good. Helped me get to 9% body fat along with a keto diet. Wink
Ok thankyou all I'm going to try those exercises as soon as possible Smile
So, I just got cleared from my concussion on monday by the school nurse. Tuesday, we had a meet. I'd been symptom free on monday at diving so I wasn't worried. But doing the same dive in the meet that I messed up on to get the concussion, I messed up on again-in the same exact way. I had a little bit of a headache, but I wasn't too concerned. Now it's been persisting for a few days. Do I say something? Is this a whole new concussion or just a relapse?
This is the sort of thing you can never really be too safe with, Sparta. Your best bet is to see a physician - a real one - about it, if the headaches are in fact persisting.
Yeah, definitely go see a doctor about that one, Sparta. It's simply not worth the risk, at all.
Tomato Tea Cure

Has anyone ever tried this? Does it actually work? It sounds too much like a Bloody Mary mix tbh. Having said that, I'm inclined to give it a try, since it contains almost all natural ingredients.

Poison Ivy and Deadly Nightshade are both natural too. Both are not things I would be keen on ingesting. So are the venoms of poisonous animals, arsenic, and so on. The idea that "natural=safe" is a very dangerous one.

The nutrients in the juice are probably what helps with colds, as Tomatoes are high in Vit C, IIRC. The Spiciness and general nature of the ingredients is what unblocks the sinuses. It does sound vaguely more pleasant than warm lemon juice (my mother added honey to it one time. Now all honey tastes like warm lemon juice with honey in it to me). It'd probably at least work temporarily, and the vitamins in it would probably help if you are lacking in any.

However, I take issue with the claim it will handle strep throat without antibiotics, as Strep Throat can, in some cases, have very severe repercussions if not properly treated.

Furthermore, their claims that capsaicin is soothing for the stomach are at best, based on questionable evidence. Generally, spicy foods do more damage to the stomach. Generally, your body's reaction to things is a good measure: Things that are too bitter, spicy, or even sour are generally not good in one way or an other, and your inability to handle them is generally the body's way of saying "YO GUY THIS IS BAD FOR YOU STOP IT ALREADY K?".

Herbal remedies and naturopathic cures (as well as homeopathic "medicines") are in no way an adequate substitute for a qualified medical practitioner, and due to the possibility that the symptoms represent some underlying condition, it can be very dangerous to rely on them.
I'm not planning on drinking as a medial treatment substitute. More like twice a week as a immune system booster to prevent future potential colds. But it does sound quite tasty right?

Uwik, please do not fall into the mistaken idea that Vitamin C is a successful preventative measure against any infection. Even in amounts exeeding 500% of your recommended daily intake, it will not do you any serious favors.

There are very few things that can genuinely bolster your immune system that you can create, in terms of food, that will show any actual benefit at all.

and, to supplement th!nk's post: yes, absolutely all of its claims about eliminating flu virus and so forth are 100% impossible. All this will do is give you an open sinus cavity and diahrea, unless you have a very strong stomach or an insensitive gal bladder. As you said, it is literally just bloody mary mix with no alcohol.

A recent article about Vitamin C

My body actually responds well to Vitamin C, in my family, actually only my eldest child is the one who doesn't seem to have any effect.

I'm concerned about the diarrhea part though, since I agree that it will probably cause it since I have digestive problems on and off.
The problem is that Vitamin C is consumed extremely quickly by the body - and more thorough case studies on it have been very inconclusive in general. As someone with an extreme immune deficiency, who has spoken to dozens of licensed physicians(ranging from researchers in immunology to full-blown immunologists and oncologists), I can tell you that at most the effect would be minimal.

However, the drink you linked in particular delivers a very low dose of Vitamin C, combined with things that will help blood pressure(albeit slightly) and sinus passages. You're actually better off just drinking Orange Juice once or twice a week.

If you'd like to do your body best, in the fight against colds and so forth, without going through what I go through obviously(as you do not have an autoimmune disease that gives you the immune system of an exposed fetus), it's not just about Vitamin C. Vitamin D and all of the B Vitamins play a much more tangible role on your immune health. Smile
Hahaha OK, that's so bland though. A 'mixture' of whatever still has more placebo effect than a simple orange juice.

I added another part about additional supplementation to my previous post for you. Wink

But, like I also said before, the hot sauce and the high acid content of the tomato juice(which, while less natually acidic than orange juice, is more viscous and passes through slower) will make it much more painful.

Kiwis are nice. Eat kiwis.
If you want to bolster your immune system, take shots of wheatgrass. Or, since it tastes horrible, take a good multivitamin like animal pak.
(Feb. 03, 2012  3:55 PM)Zain Wrote: [ -> ]If you want to bolster your immune system, take shots of wheatgrass. Or, since it tastes horrible, take a good multivitamin like animal pak.

Wheatgrass has not had any substantial evidence of impact on the immune system whatsoever beyond the - extremely ill-represented - "benefits" of chlorophyll in one's diet. The supposed links to reduction in cancer rates and such are just that - supposed. Not scientifically supported. Its very few tangible benefits are unrelated entirely.

Wheatgrass is also nutritionally inferior to most green vegetables, aside from... Vitamin E? I think.

Regardless, it will help his immune system about as much as turning a doorknob or chewing gum after meals.

As for the multivitamin... those are just not really all they're cracked up to be in general. They work for certain things, and generally only those certain things - and beyond that you constantly run the risk of medication interactions, overdoses, and so forth.

The idea that everyone needs vitamins is a myth, along with the idea that they provide a universal boon and that there's no harm in taking them.
