Writing Tournament: Revival. *New Info Up* Second Round Under Way!!!

Alright, everyone! Sorry for the delay, but I'm finally ready with the next round! First, the match ups!
And here they are! (Click to View)
Confused by battle #2? Fear not, for I will explain it!
In this battle, there will will two tiers of battling. First, the judges will vote on two of the entries from that round they liked the best. Then, they will vote on one entry from there. This way, everyone has a fair shot, and Temporal doesn't just get a bye into the final rounds.

Also: when you send your story entries into me, please include the previous chapter in the PM as well. This way, we can have something to go on while judging your second chapters.

And now...Here it is. The Theme!!
A CLEVER SOLUTION

Does it have to solve the fatal error? What is meant by clever? These are the questions you can answer for yourselves, and let your creativity fly!
Please PM me your entries ASAP. I will assign a date in the next few days. In the meantime, good luck and have fun! (:

I would like the idea of starting Writing tournaments up again. I don't think many have been made since I joined. When you put "What type of tournament you would like", do you mean format?
i think the idea of a writing tournament is really good. ive seen where people post their stories in the off-topic forum and a tournament seems really fun😃
Good to see that you're taking this under your wing Sparta.

I think a BRR or RR format would take too long (been there, done that), so go with Double Elimination.

I'd love to see if this works out.

Kuji
I was thinking double elimination, but teams might also help as well. If everyone pairs up with someone else, then it would reduce the amount of battles in half.
I tried this once before and, surprisingly, it worked well. Double elimination, tag-team format. That's certainly an option.

Yeah. As in, tag-team, round robin, themes, etc. all the rules in general.
You'll want to check Fyuuor's GFX Competition (if you remember) for the OP style you should aim for. It's something we all should aim for as tournament organizers.

I really say that Tag-Team can, not will, can cause one member to be let down. After all those dropouts (and the ban) in the GFX Tournament WLPaA ran, I don't think a Tag-Team will work that well. I suggest limit the amount of participants, and when the accountability of each individual here increases, go with Tag-Team.

More on the rules:
I find a judging panel alright, but, I think introducing a different system is better.

Even number of judges.
A vote thread.

You win by getting two judges to vote for your entry for that round, or one judge voting for, and winning the majority of the votes. Votes by the community should follow a strict criticism and logic based choice. I don't think it's fair (read, GFX Tourney voters, when they vote for the clearly horrible piece).

Just my 2 cents.
The problem with tournaments that require some sort of collaboration between members is that it is very bothersome to pester people to get their entries in so that the tournament can advance.

On the other hand, "every man for himself" tournaments can be executed faster and cleaner.

Just some thoughts (◕‿◕✿)
I like the idea of 1v1's. They might work better than tag teams, and will certainly be more efficient.
I wish there could be a warning given for dropping out of tournaments, similar to how warnings are given if you say you can go and then do not go to a WBO event, providing you don't say anything beforehand.

I'd like to keep the judging as simple as possible, as well. I myself won't be a judge since I would know who did what, but maybe a panel of 3 that work together to decide on each entry could work. But then that requires no thread to be made?
Like I said:

Even number of judges. (example is 2)

You had mentioned that before. The only reason I didn't jump on that idea is because it seems a little complicated - to be fair, it really isn't in retrospect. I just can't imagine it being easy to wait for the judges, then see the votes, whatever.
Besides, my past experiences with votes have been, needless to say, interesting. I'd rather just rely on a trained eye's expertise and critique on the criteria rather than the general public's opinions that could, quite possible, be influenced by popularity (We keep the threads anonymous, but some people have a writing style that just gives them away anyways). If it's all the same to you, Kujikato, I'd like to stick to only a panel of judges and do away with votes. Does that seem okay?
I'm cool with that, hah.

Another idea is to finish the tournament round robin style (top three do a quickish RR), IMO it is much more fair.
Hah, Sparta you had me for a second.
"Some of you may remember me, some of you may not. For those of you who don't, I used to write stories on this website fairly often. In addition to that, I created the first WBO Writing Tournament."
I was like, wait "fairly?" That's not even the word...

And, yes a tournament sounds fantastic. I would participate.
Oh, Heaven, yes! Writing Tournaments! Sparta! I'm just a bit overjoyed to see Sparta again.

I'm thinking 1-on-1's to be best. Not very messy and easy to judge.

I also like you being humble, Sparta, about us not remembering you. You've been a good boy haven't you?
I agree with Septentrione, 1 on 1 is very simple and it makes it pretty easy to judge. I personally do not like Tag Team (I think that idea was brought up) because if the 2 best pair up it makes it extremely hard for others to win.

I agree with what you're saying, especially with Tag-teams. So, brackets or round robin is the last decision? Otherwise, I think everything is set up. Once we decide on that, I'll recycle this thread as the homepage. Anyone who would like to sign up for the tournament, please PM me. If you are signing up though, make sure you are able to commit to it. Anyone who drops out after signing up without a valid reason should get a warning, because it makes it hard for both the judges, players, and I to compensate. However, that's not the case, so I'm putting this all on an honesty system.
Alright, since the announcement of this tournament, I received a grand total of 2 Private Messages, and only one was for signing up for the tournament. In which case, there doesn't seem to be much excitement for this...it's a shame, but if no one really "shows up" in the next week or so then it may be time to put this to rest (Well, for me anyways, haha). I'm going to start taking drivers ed soon, but I wanted to push it off as long as I could to make room for this tournament. If I don't get a lot of enthusiasm (As already seems to be the case), then I will leave it alone and go get my license.
I planned on making a second writing tournament from my first one which TOTALLY sucked, since few of the judges actually cared. I also have a petition to Insomniac. on this, but I don't think he read it. Oh well.

I just wish you good luck on this, hope you don't epic-ly fail like I did. Also, I like the idea of 1v1. This allows for actual comparison, which is the basis of judging.

Fixed.

Anyways, I'm in on this for the fun, but my skills as a write unles it's comedy, suck Grin

I would like to participate (I forgot if I sent you a PM or not). I really want to try to put a story together for this. My writing has gotten better.
Thunder Dome Yep! Got your PM. Unfortunately, I haven't really gotten any others thus far.
Tournament Sign Ups so far:
1. Thunder Dome
2. Tri
3. Kujikatu

At this point, I just don't feel like we have received enough enthusiasm. If you guys want to offer suggestions on how to promote this, or if you could even refer some friends I would truly appreciate the support. Otherwise, we'll have to see.
Maybe to promote this we could look through past Writing Tournament threads, see if anyone of them is still active and then send them a Private Message About it.
I wasn't here for the first tournament, but I think it sounds like a good idea. When would it start, if you ended up doing this? I write short stories occasionally, so I have enough time I might be interested Smile
The Supreme One My most accurate guess would be sometime within the next week or 2, depending on how many signups we end up getting. I have a few so far, but I always worry about dropouts and so I'm not sure if that number will ever stabilize. I'm hoping for at least 20 people, and I have around 5 or so entries thus far.
So, to answer your question, I'm shooting for sometime in early to middle May.
Wait, you can sign up already? How, and when did it start? I want to be on this tournament, haha.
I've stickied the thread, hopefully you'll get more interest and get a tournament going soon. Best of luck ↖(^▽^)↗
