Well, I tried searching for this kind of thread but didn't find one so I thought I'd make it as this is something that really, really bugs me.
When I think of today's pop culture, I feel like a lot of it is manufactured whereas back in the 30s-50s things felt more... real. Hell, even up til the 90s we were still good. Now, I'm not saying that music today is garbage, there's still some good artists out there. What I am saying is that there are different requirements to become famous these days.
In the olden days, singers were famous because they could sing. Their popularity was a result of their natural, raw talent. Today we have singers who aren't very talented but are famous AND successful because they've got the 'image'. The focus is on beautiful people rather than beautiful voices. Singers like Katy Perry embody the shallowness of pop culture today, in my opinion. She's the kind of person who can get away with singing songs that'd make Pamela Anderson blush whilst still having a target audience of tween girls. She focuses much more on her appearance than her singing. There's a lot of other singers like her too such as Britney Spears and Ke$sha but Katy Perry is probably the worst.
I really started listening to old songs after playing games like Fallout 3 and Bioshock, in which they feature heavily as they're both retro-futuristic... well Bioshock isn't technically retro-futuristic BUT THAT'S BESIDES THE POINT. I was AMAZED when I first heard these songs. They felt real. They didn't feel manufactured, it felt like the singers poured their heart and soul into the song. The lyrics are well thought out. Right now I will write some lyrics off the top of my head, the first lyrics that come to mind (being serious) and we can compare:
Ink Spots- My Prayer
My prayer is to linger with you
At the end of the day
In a dream that's divine
My prayer is a rapture in blue
With the world far away
And your lips close to mine
Justin Bieber- Baby
Baby, baby, baby
Ohhhhhh
Baby, baby, baby
Ohhhhhhh
Baby, baby, baby
Ohhhhhhh
(Honestly though, give Justin Bieber a break. He's a good kid and a good role model for his fanbase)
Billie Holiday - Strange Fruit
Southern trees bear a strange fruit
Blood on the leaves
And blood at the root
Black bodies swinging in the southern breeze
Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees
Ke$ha- Tik Tok
I'm talking pedicure on our toes, toes
Trying on all our clothes, clothes
Boys blowing up our phones, phones
Drop-toppin and playin my favourite CDs
Pulling up to the parties
Tryin' to get a little bit tipsy
Frank Sinatra- That's life
As funny as it may seem
Some people get their kicks
Stompin' on a dream
But I don't let it, let it get me down
Cos this fine ol' world, it keeps spinnin' around
Justin Timberlake- Damn girl
Don't need no maybelline
Cos you a beauty queen
Don't need no L'oreal
Cos b**** you're bad as hell
Ella Fitzgerald- Into each life
Into each life
Some rain must fall
But too much, too much is falling in mine
Into each heart, some tears must fall
But some day, the sun will shine
Some folks can lose
The blues in their heart
But when I think of you
Another shower starts
Nicki Minaj- Super bass
I said, excuse me you're a hell of a guy
I mean my, my, my, my you're like pelican fly
I mean, you're so shy and I'm loving your tie
You're like slicker than the guy with the thing on his eye, oh
Not gonna include any hip-hop lyrics because 90% of the songs are total trash. I used to like hip hop until I grew up and listened to the lyrics, none of which are appropriate to post here.
Again, I'm not saying that all current pop music is bad, but I think most of it is devoid of any kind of lyrical value. People aren't trying as hard as they used to.
Opinions?
By the way people, let's not start a flame war. If you don't agree, let it be known but be civilised! I just think it's an interesting topic and I apologise if I've offended anyone by slagging off their favourite artists.
