So how well were they actually against MFB?
As for being early in the generation, they did quite well for their immediate structure. Mid season, and at their stregnth, you can see intergenerational tournaments.
Bursts only exploded with attack types with rubber flats. Outside of that, they mainly has normal sleepouts. This is mainly since burst is similar to the height of a tall mfb. Most of the time, it hits the disk instead of the layer, which doesn't stimulate burst as much. Phws, hws, and most 4d didn't stimulate burst. Some 4d and almost all zero g did.
Also, regarding spriggan, it was decently tight. It was actually the shape that causes the burst, since it is more rectangular than anything. As a result, it turns notches more frequently, and consequently, an increased chance of burst, NOT because it is loose.
