Yea the demon part is like rather confusing but Guren is a good man, right up to the part he took the sword and also the part he got possessed (not his fault though)
Mahiru became possessed and at one point had two demons, causing her personality to become twisted. 
As Mahiru-no-yo she still loves Guren but the love was twisted
