So as we all know Takara Tomy at the end of Superking released 2 new types of driver. They realeased the High Drivers as well as the metal Drivers, which we will be talking about today.
When they first introduced the Metal Drivers their gimmick was that they were essentially a dash driver but with a metal cap. This metal cap is suppose to increase the strength of the lock on the teeth of the layers/chips/chassis. Where this was an interesting idea, it turned out to be a bad one. The metal caps on the drivers were breaking the teeth on layers/chips/chassis because the little tabs on the top of the caps. (As seen in the pictures below.) This was happening because the metal tabs were more dense than the plastic teeth on the layers/chips/chassis.
(Metal Survive)
(Metal Destroy)
(Metal Xtreme)
Now due to these tabs breaking teeth a lot of bladers (especially competitive bladers) would opt out of using the metal drivers and just stuck with using regular and dash drivers. The only real exceptions being double chassis and the Buhamut Chip Core from Roar Buhamut. Double chassis seemed to all have a lot thicker plastic teeth that wouldn’t really be effected by the metal drivers, while the Buhamut Chip Core has no teeth but slopes. This means the tabs wouldn’t have any plastic teeth to damage.
After it seemed as if the metal drivers were a bust bladers were starting to wonder if Takara Tomy would address the issues. Either by making layers/chips/chassis with metal teeth or just not making metal drivers anymore at all. Well I’m here to tell you that they opted to try something different! It seems that with the release of Metal Drift from the B-190 battle set and Metal Universe from the B-191 customize set they decided to try taking the more sharp sided tabs on the metal caps and making them more curved or rounded, as well as making them a little shorter. (See pictures below.) This from what I have found has essentially solved the issue of the teeth breaking!
(Metal Drift)
(Metal Universe)
While we can all rejoice that the issue of teeth being broken by these metal drivers has been solved for future releases, we now face a new issue with the metal drivers. Their burst resistance. Yea unfortunately now that the tabs are more rounded they slide under the teeth fairly easy. This has caused them to have weaker burst resistance than even a normal sprinted driver, yet they have the stronger dash spring inside them! This is most unfortunate. From what it feels like to me their burst resistance is even less than that of regular Bearing. So Takara Tomy still has a few more kinks to work out, and it looks like most people will still opt out of using the Metal Drivers in favor of normal and dash drivers. Please let me know what you all think about this. Did you even realize they changed the tabs on the caps?
