A Change to Metal Drivers?! - CrisisCrusher07 - Dec. 01, 2021

So as we all know Takara Tomy at the end of Superking released 2 new types of driver. They realeased the High Drivers as well as the metal Drivers, which we will be talking about today.

When they first introduced the Metal Drivers their gimmick was that they were essentially a dash driver but with a metal cap. This metal cap is suppose to increase the strength of the lock on the teeth of the layers/chips/chassis. Where this was an interesting idea, it turned out to be a bad one. The metal caps on the drivers were breaking the teeth on layers/chips/chassis because the little tabs on the top of the caps. (As seen in the pictures below.) This was happening because the metal tabs were more dense than the plastic teeth on the layers/chips/chassis.

(Metal Xtreme)

Now due to these tabs breaking teeth a lot of bladers (especially competitive bladers) would opt out of using the metal drivers and just stuck with using regular and dash drivers. The only real exceptions being double chassis and the Buhamut Chip Core from Roar Buhamut. Double chassis seemed to all have a lot thicker plastic teeth that wouldn’t really be effected by the metal drivers, while the Buhamut Chip Core has no teeth but slopes. This means the tabs wouldn’t have any plastic teeth to damage.

After it seemed as if the metal drivers were a bust bladers were starting to wonder if Takara Tomy would address the issues. Either by making layers/chips/chassis with metal teeth or just not making metal drivers anymore at all. Well I’m here to tell you that they opted to try something different! It seems that with the release of Metal Drift from the B-190 battle set and Metal Universe from the B-191 customize set they decided to try taking the more sharp sided tabs on the metal caps and making them more curved or rounded, as well as making them a little shorter. (See pictures below.) This from what I have found has essentially solved the issue of the teeth breaking!

While we can all rejoice that the issue of teeth being broken by these metal drivers has been solved for future releases, we now face a new issue with the metal drivers. Their burst resistance. Yea unfortunately now that the tabs are more rounded they slide under the teeth fairly easy. This has caused them to have weaker burst resistance than even a normal sprinted driver, yet they have the stronger dash spring inside them! This is most unfortunate. From what it feels like to me their burst resistance is even less than that of regular Bearing. So Takara Tomy still has a few more kinks to work out, and it looks like most people will still opt out of using the Metal Drivers in favor of normal and dash drivers. Please let me know what you all think about this. Did you even realize they changed the tabs on the caps?

RE: A Change to Metal Drivers?! - #Fafnir - Dec. 01, 2021

A friend of mine informed me of the change they made to the metal drivers from B-190 and B-191, but I wasn't aware of their burst resistance being worse than that of the original Bearing. The physics behind it makes since though, so I'm not too surprised. I'm just glad Takara realized this issue and is taking the necessary steps to fix it haha.

Although somewhat unrelated to the topic of the thread (Technically this might be a change to the Metal Drift and Metal Universe drivers if it's not just a coincidence?), the same friend I mentioned above has had major success with his Metal Universe and Metal Drift drivers, likely due to the fact that, at least with his, they're more free-spinning than their normal-capped counterparts. Is this the case for anyone else, or is it just a coincidence?

I had bought 3 B-191 and 2 of the Roar Buhamut from the B-190. All 3 of my Metal Universe drivers were indeed super free spinning to where you would say they were awakened. Also yes both of my Metal Drifts were more free spinning than my regular drifts. I also found that with the Metal Drifts being more free spinning than the regular drifts I own as well as having more center weight because of the metal cap the beys tend to stay in the middle of the stadium with less chance of wigging out than normal Drift.

I only have Drift to compare (no Universe for me), but I would say I've had the same experience. The plate on my MDr does seem to spin more freely than its normal counterpart.

Although I'm probably not going to use Metal Universe, it does work well as I would like to run some tests on the stock Prominence Phoenix combo.
However I have to ask, are the tabs shortened on Metal Destroy?

No they are not.

RE: A Change to Metal Drivers?! - TheRogueBlader - Dec. 02, 2021

I have experienced this as well. With having metal xtreme and metal survive along with metal universe it’s safe to say that metal xtreme and metal survive have normal sizes tabs, and a dash spring obviously, but since the tabs are metal they break teeth. Besides the breaking teeth thing they’re essentially just dash drivers but also since the caps are metal it’s got more friction with the teeth so it breaks teeth and is tighter than a dash because of it being harder to move against the teeth than the normal plastic capped dash drivers.
Metal universe’s tabs are either rounder or shorter. When I examined them it seemed like they were simply shorter rather than round, but it may be mold variation or just a mistake on my part. Because of this the tabs barely make contact and don’t break teeth, but because they don’t make much contact it’s got much weaker burst resistance than a dash driver and even a bit less than a normal springed driver.
So TT can choose to make metal drivers either of these ways but with the drivers being metal 1 of the 2 options will occur unless TT makes something new
1: Tabs are normal sized breaking teeth and providing burst resistance higher than that of a dash
2: Tabs are shorter/rounder not harming teeth whatsoever, however burst resistance is a slight step below that of a normal springed driver

Thank you for this information! I was a bit skeptical about the burst resistance of Metal Universe when I got it. Now I know I didn't get a bad one.

And even then, it's only a couple of grams and all CWD. It might give you an edge in a matchup where you're neck-and-neck in weight.

I don't see any real reason to use metal over dash if the option is there but kinda neat I suppose.

Just following up with the chips you mentioned. With the release of Ultimate Valkyrie I naturally started testing more right spin attacker combos. Well my xtreme’ from the random booster super satan has worn down a lot so I opted to use the Metal Xtreme’ for my testing so I didn’t wear down my xtreme’ even more. I noticed that the teeth on Belial 2 and Valkyrie 2 are not really connecting with the larger tabs on the Metal Xtreme. Don’t know if you have had the same results but if so I would like to know so I can let people know if it’s a mold variant or not.
