What should I focus on to get better?

My son and I are just getting into Beyblade. We have bought 9 between us. I have been watching videos trying to learn good combos, tech, and such. I am mostly playing with Soar Phoenix. I have bounced back and forth between experimenting with 1-60 and 9-60 for ratchets and Rush, Level, and Taper for bits. I have about a 20%-win rate against my son who plays mostly random stuff that he just throws together. His best though is a Sterling Wolf 3-60 FB who I have never beat. WHAT THE HECK AM I DOING WRONG?

We have our first tournament Friday to see what the competitive scene is like, and I would like to not completely suck.

SterlingWolf is one of the top meta picks and have a great amount of Defense and Stamina. It's gonna be tricky. It also depends on who plays more, you or your son. You aren't really doing anything wrong. Your son is just using a pretty meta combo. If your set on using SoarPhoenix to beat him then I would recommend 7-60 or 5-60Point to hit hard and fast but still have the stamina to try to keep up with SterlingWolf
I figured that particular matchup may have just been against me. I helped him put together the Sterling Wolf combo from doing a little research, so I knew it was at least decent. But the fact that I hardly win against a bunch of his other random stuff made me think it was something more. He likes playing with Tusk Mammoth and Samurai Saber as well with random other parts and I hardly win against them.

I don't have Point yet. Rush, Taper, and Level seem to be my best options for what I do have.
Just did some testing and 7-60/5-60Point performed better then 1-60/9-60Taper/Rush/Level against Wolf. Testing can vary so this isn't an absolute but hope this helps

Yeah that matchup just might not be meant to be. besides that it's really just going to be trial and error. I would say maybe take a page out of his book and try random stuff and see what works. or just any random ideas that pop into your head, some of my best combos were made that way. Also since you don't have Point I think Level can be a nice substitute but can also be tricky because of the extra amount of gears in the bit

Also as for what to focus on they get better another tip is that when building a combo to beat an opponent it's really good to know how your combo works as best as you can and know how your opponent's combo works as best as you can. if you know how your opponents combo works you can take a good stab at what strategy they might be using to beat you and counter it.
Thanks for the help, Frisk. I do have a 5-60 so I will try that with Level.

Have Shark Edge and Sting Unicorn that I'm going to try to put something together with some of our remaining parts, so I have 3 on hand for the tournament this week.

No problem! Always glad to see kids and parents bonding over Beyblade! Good luck to you and your son on the tournament!

Out of curiosity what type of launcher are you using? Launchers also play a heavy role in battles.

I'm using the string launcher from the Soar Phoenix pack without a grip handle. My son uses the victory launcher.

I went and grabbed a couple more yesterday. Grabbed the Tide Whale and Cobalt Dragoon packs. Cobalt Dragoon 1-60E is now undefeated against Sterling Wolf so at least I stand a chance against him now.

I still can't do much with Soar Phoenix 5-60L. I feel like if I slant it at all, Level loses so much power and fizzles so fast. If I launch it flat, it grabs the rail so hard and just self KOs. If I grab anything else, I will try to get something with Point and see if that helps.

Shark Edge 3-60C is treating me pretty good.

So it makes sense why your son is beating you. The “Victory Launcher” also known as the Hold Launcher is technically the strongest X launcher due to all the gears in it (do be careful though since it destroys ripcords pretty easily). If you want to stand a chance fully then buy a Tournament Grade Winder Launcher along with a Takera Tomy launcher grip then you are all set

For your Soar Phoenix I recommend using the Point bit. You probably would work better with the more stamina and Phoenix 5-60P is one of the meta combos. If you also do not want to self KO with a flat launch then practice lighter launches that still pack a punch

If you or your child have any more bey questions please ask them here. Frisk or I would be gladly happy to assist you on any Beyblade related questions you have
VermillionMoon What the heck?! Don't sign me up to help. Haha jk If I'd be happy to answer any questions!

You should try to get your hands on Xeno Excalibur. If the launcher is anything like The Db launcher then It should be good

The hold launcher and the winder launcher aren't any different FYI. the only difference is that you get a better grip with the hold launcher but they will both generate the same amount of power

Yeah I will keep an eye out for an opportunity to grab the Point bit. Unfortunately, I have already maxed out on the amount of money my wife will let me spends on toys. 😋 So for now I am stuck with what I have.

Lighter launches is definitely something I need to practice with. “Lighter launches that still pack a punch” seems like a very delicate balance. Someone told me to launch Cobalt Dragoon on Elevate a little lighter as well.
launching light with Dragoon on elevate is good but as you said it's important to gauge how launch it. Dragoon spin steel usually works it's not always guaranteed to get you that win. you don't have to full send it but just make sure you don't launch too light or else you might be in trouble And it could be the difference between winning or losing a match. Also yeah Beyblades are addicting to buy at times haha I always spend more then I intend to. Definitely good you'll be trying to get Point next time you spend tho!

It's still good to get for the ripcord since the winder is longer but the launcher itself as far as I understand is the same as the regular one

If u ever use the victory launcher with an attack combo launch as hard as possible just a random tip

And this is how you literally destroy a ripcord. The Victory launcher chews up ripcord teeth if you pull too hard. We literally have a whole thread here about it. Honestly the OP’s child should just use standard tournament grade with the extend ripcord as it is safer. Of course they can also fix their Victory launcher to not eat up ripcords but that is just a pain. OP if you do want that tutorial however feel free to ask me for it

I don’t have a victory launcher or hold launcher so I can’t really agree but imma just go with what you say

And also go to the gym to get stronger launches
if you want stronger launches just practicing launching will help. sure the gym can help. But you also need stability, proper positioning and a path to follow when pulling. And understanding how to generate power with your shoulders, elbows, wrists, and fingertips.

this should be helpful. Just turn on auto generate English captions, the captions are not 100% accurate but it'll help give you a good idea. you can also just look at their body language to get a good idea
That is concerning about the victory launcher issue. We don't have a lot of cash to throw around, so we want our gear to last a long as possible. VermillionMoon, would you mind sharing that resource with me so I can get it fixed up for him?

Thanks for the vid, Frisk. I will check it out.

My son and I got through our tournament Friday and chalked it up to a learning experience. We did 5 rounds to qualify for the top cut, I won 2/5 and my son didn't win a single match. One of my two wins was *against* my son, and I tried to throw it so he could have one W for the night. I purposely picked my beys so that he countered me still beat him. You know that Phoenix Wing vs Silver Wolf match up I was complaining about at the start of this thread? We go to a tournament and PW freakin' Xtreme finishes SW for the win while I'm *trying* to lose.
