My question is; where do I start? I want to be able to edit pictures like my avatar and sig to make them look better.

I'm sure photoshop would help. But I wouldn't know. I never spent time with graphics on the computer, to be honest. I want to though =/

filter>sharpen
then edit>fade sharpen if it's too sharp, turn down the % thing untill your happy

filter>blur>gaussian blur
then set it at like 3, then edit>fade blur, set it at soft light or something

Photoshop can be most people's general editing program. I like its Pen Tools better than Illustrator's. (applies to CS and above)

You can get it in various places. It's the internet. :)

If you want to go legitimate, you can try to pick it off eBay. If you want to go "semi"-legitimate, ask a friend to copy it for you along with serial number.

photoshop is an excellent program. It takes quite a while to become profficient with it (if your previous experience was mainly limited to ms paint haha), and even then there are likely plenty of options that are still untouched.

and because it's such a popular program there are heaps of guides on the net for various objectives too.

well, i was looking to make sigs that resemble works like these;

so added text, changing the shape so its not just a box, merging pictures, ect.

Then Photoshop it is. :)

There's GIMP which is free, but since I started PS first, I was not as adaptable to GIMP and it's interface (especially on the Mac version blah).
