Walk with me for a second: I think the Pokémon community has trouble comprehending good, or even competent writing. Now that statement sounds crazy and (purposely) provocative, but let's think about this for a second. If we're writing a fully fleshed, (writing-wise) well-rounded character, this means that they be fully developed in terms of positive and negative aspects. For example, my goat Masamune. He was originally portrayed by introducing only his negative traits, and then gradually revealed positive ones as we got to know him better (a bit similar to Daichi as well). Starting with Gen 9, we now have fully well-rounded characters that openly have virtues and flaws, and most importantly, are not antagonists. So they are not demonized or anything of the sort; they just exist as they are, which is sensible and realistic to write. So, as I have described, you would have the impression that recently, the stories and characters have had an uptick in quality, and that is strictly what I believe. So seeing some of the debates surrounding the story of Scarlet and Violet and Legends Z-A is genuinely causing my brain to rot in real time. I have no problem with deeper analysis and criticism, that's like, my whole thing here. But if we're trying to portray that the characters in these games, on a fundamental level, have negative personality traits and doing wrong is bad writing, you've fully lost me.
This is really a full description of my point, and this isn't meant to be long, so I'll leave it here. But alls I'm saying is that the same people saying Urvain/Taunie are bad characters for having flaws (their Hero Complex was introduced and fleshed out starting from the first 10 minutes of the game btw), are the same people who gas up Silver for doing literally nothing. This post isn't about Silver either, but bro is literally not even an actual character. How do you people like him at all. The first 3 games didn't even attempt to tell a story; them being a favorite in anything story or character-wise is insanity. He literally just is a bad guy who doesn't care about his Pokémon, and gets beaten up so much that he just stops being mean out of necessity. Even when HGSS introduces the fact that Giovanni is his dad, they don't use it to contribute to his actions or characterizations in the story at all, because the fundamental core of his flaws is about his relationship with his Pokemon; it's like a side note from an alternate reality where Gold and Silver were written to have an actual plot. But anyway, I'm getting ahead of myself, and I'm sure you get the point by now.
