After seeing a picture posted by TheBladingCow, I checked out my layer weights and found that despite how they initially look from the top side, the bottom side shows that a lot of them are inconsistently filled.

An example is these Layer Weights I took pictures of:

First picture: Ten Weight
Left: 3 stars, one hex hollowed out (top right in picture)
Right: 2 stars, two hexes hollowed out (top left and top right in picture)
Both have the exact same weight at 8.49g

Second Picture: Zan Weight
3 stars, right side has the indentations more hollowed out.
I have another one with 4 stars, both sides are equally filled (not pictured)
Interestingly, the 3 starred one with one hollow side is heavier at 8,1 grams compared to my 4 starred one, which weighs 8 grams


I used to say that the stars on the bottom of Core Disks are only for marking purposes, since sometimes a 4 starred one is not the heaviest. However, it seems to be different for layer weights. Although 4 starred Layer Weights are still not guaranteed to be heavier, those with less than 4 stars seem to have been deliberately designed to be imbalanced. Since the weigh difference is pretty negligible, I hopefully assume the balance is also not significantly affected.

That was pretty interesting. I'll see if mines are also unbalanced tonight.

Someone (I forget who, but I think it was in some Discord server) pointed out a while ago that some of the Weights were filled in differently, and this thread reminded me of that so I discussed this with Shindog a few days ago, so hopefully he can provide us with more data/pictures for this. As I only have a total of three (3) Layer Weights and none of them are the same ones, idk how much I'd really be able to contribute to this as I can't really compare two otherwise identical weights that are filled in differently.


My Metsu has 4 stars, weighs 8.07g, and doesn't appear to have any places hollowed out on the bottom.


My Ten has 3 stars, weighs 8.30g, and has 1 of its hexes hollowed out, though it isn't the same hex where the 4th star is missing.


My Zan has 1 star, weighs 7.90g, and appears to be equally hollowed out all around.

From what Shindog told me, no matter the number of stars/filled in sections of the weight, it doesn't seem to affect its weight (which lines up with what you've said so far) but I'm not sure if he tested if this has any effect on balance? It also seems like the number of stars corresponding to the number of filled in sections isn't true for all weights either, since all of his Sens/Metsus look the same regardless of stars.

The link shows some of the layer weights that I have with different number of stars.  My scale can only go down to a tenth of a gram, but all the layer weights I showed in those photos weigh the same as others in the same photo despite having diff number of stars.  

I did test Ten a little bit to see if the Stars affected balance much and did not see a significant difference.  Also, I have 3 star Ten that weighs more than 4 star Ten.

Hey all, professional noob blader here. I enjoyed participating in the fighting of exploding spinning tops while pretending I know how inertia works. I will generally partake in gatherings of people with a similar interest of these rotating objects around the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
