The Breakdown
This was the first event going into Day 2 of Beyblade Midwest, and the only tournament over the weekend I didn't actually play in (I don't really
like 4D format myself, I was running it mostly as a favor to JA). Fortunately, that put me in prime position to see as much of it as possible and loan out combos to several people that weren't very well equipped to play otherwise. I gotta admit, I didn't expect to see Phantom 230 spammed nearly this heavily, and everyone among the top 3 ended up running some variation of it. In the past I've seen Phantom run on Bearing: Drive or on staller setups like 85 Metal Flat/Wife Flat/Xtreme Flat, but not until this tournament have I seen it succeed this much on 230 even against mid height Flash.
Even more impressive was how close it came in the end, with all four of our finalists ending the first stage with a 5-2 win/loss record. Even more luckily Challonge got the seeding for the finals right in this four way tie the first time, which doesn't always happen when it comes to larger ties in general. Several matches came down to either Flash dittos or Phantom dittos along the way, but I still got to see some hilarious sights such as a Phantom on a rather fresh Metal Ball struggling to stay upright and leaning until it scraped against the stadium floor so badly that a 105 height Scythe was able to outspin it by a mile repeatedly and a Diablo being completely tossed over the wall of the stadium for a KO.
I don't think my overall opinion of 4D as a format has changed much from hosting and watching it this weekend, though I should mention that JA has taken the Beyblade Midwest 4D crown for the third year in a row now which is rather impressive in its own right. Similarly impressive was fourth place
Zenos, who ended up making it all the way to finals off of loaner combos, absolutely terrified people with his Flash play, and legitimately gave everyone a run for their money in final stage with pure skill. Someone get this guy some 4D beys of his own and he might be trying to steal away JA's crown next year.
