This is a tournament report for Lui's Rules 5-7-22. It was an unranked experimental event in Tukwila Washington.
This event used a die to determine which of six rules would be used for every match in each round. Here are the six rules we used that represent 1 number on each side of the die.
- 1. The bey that stops spinning first wins. (ring outs apply normally and beys must be launched correctly).
- 2. Knock outs are worth 2 points.
- 3. Bursts are worth 3 points.
- 4. Matches are to 4 points instead of 3.
- 5. A small round sponge will be added to the center of each stadium and reset after each battle.
- 6. You must launch with only your hands (you can use one or both).
For this event we were back at Foster High School. This venue is very nice and has covered areas and lots of places to sit. The best part is that it's free. The weather was nice today. It had been raining in Seattle the past few days and we were worried the event would get rained out. The sky started as overcast but was almost warm by the end of the event. Overall a great day to play beyblade a no major problems at the venue.
(A blader thought his bey was missing but found it in his bag a few minutes later, what a relief.)
We had a few bladers from Oregon drive up. Big shout out to them for making the trip. We also had many regulars from the Wa community. A few new bladers played today but not many overall.
This event was probably the most fun playing beyblade I have had. When we announced the new rule for each round players would either cheer or groan. Some rules turned out to be very scary.
We played double round robin so this meant 7 rounds. We agreed to play every rule once before we could play any again. We played all 6 rules then well rolled the last one as a wild card round.
Round 1 rolled a 5 so we used the sponges. No one could have predicted what would happened next. We all underestimated the power of the sponges. The first round I judged they immediately had a burst finish. I thought it was odd but we kept playing. Then i hear from the other stadiums they also both had busts that round. What followed was the sponges bouncing off the walls pushing beys into pockets, unfortunate beys would land on top of them after being hit and burst instantly, other times the sponge would get caught on the disk and burst the bey instantly. It was carnage.
Round 2 the die landed on 2 so 2 point knock outs came into play. This is where most players switched to an attack type. Many Guilty vs Guilty match ups. Also we saw a fair amount of ultimate.
Round 3 the unforgiving die landed on 1. The bey that stops spinning first wins (ring outs are as normal). This round was interesting bc many players chose to play attack and snipe any opponent trying to slow launch. It became a big mind game of "should I use attack, Will they use attack?" It was a funny round and most players seemed to get a big kick out of the game being flipped upside down with this rule.
If you got a burst in round 4 it gave you an instant win. Bursts were worth 3 points in this round. I don't think the rule ever came up though. It might have I just don't remember anyone getting a burst this round. Pretty standard overall.
In round 5 launchers became forbidden and you had to launch with you hand. This round had mixed feelings from the players. Some people could hand launch surprisingly well but others had trouble even managing a few rotations (myself included). Most every single game had several mislaunches. We decided to go easy on this mislaunches in this round for obvious reasons. I think this round really challenged player creativity with building their combo and how they would launch. Many people went with drift but this led to funny outcomes where hasbro beys were beating drift combos in same spin.
Round 6 was played until one player reached 4 points. Overall this was a standard round but where it really shinned was on players making comebacks during their games. They had more chances to recover from their mistakes and a few people went from 3-1 to 3-4. It was also cool bc once again attack types had more representation this round. Perhaps bc they had extra chances if they happen to self ko.
Round 7 the final round. We decided to reset the dice and play with whatever the universe gave us. As soon as I announced that the die landed on 5 the group broke into mixed cheers and wails of terror. The sponges were back! Once again the sponges brought our beys to their knees. If there is one thing I learned from this event its this: The sponge always wins.
In the finals we played normal deck format. Akajumo came in first for his block followed by Surge Master . Plot Armor took the first place spot in our block and I took second.
Akajumo went undefeated all day. He is truly the master of Lui's Rules. He easily beat all my combos with only his Guilty on Xtreme. He definitly deserved his win. I took the second place spot after a very tough game against my main rival Plot Armor. Every we time we play it is a technical nightmare on the judge lol. We changed modes, switch beys, had replays. It was a super fun and strategic game. Plot Armor got 3rd Place. SurgeMaster was a younger player but he played well and held his own in the top 4. He is definitly not the blader to underestimate.
Overall we had a great day of beyblade. I will say again this was the most fun I have had with all of my friends playing this game. We all played hard and had a great time trying to navigate these crazy rules.
