CHAPTER 2: He’s the Hero?
Our story begins one day in Hearthtown. Jack was awoken by the sudden warmth of the sunlight hitting his face. His eyes slowly eased open. He was greeted with the sight of his room; it was a pigsty. Clothes that missed the basket were in a scattered pile, comic books and CDs were lying in random places, and his Super Nintendo games piled like towers in an artistic fashion. That was Jack’s only shame; while the other kids were playing the Nintendo DS and the Wii, he was stuck with the Super Nintendo that his dad owned when he was a teenager. It wasn’t too bad; he was enjoying a game called EarthBound that his dad constantly talked about. He dragged himself out of bed and stumbled downstairs, vision blurred. His eyes widened when the smell of frying bacon hit his nose.
His mother greeted him. “Morning, sunshine!†She slid a plate onto the table where Jack normally sat. He slid into his seat and scarfed the bacon. He grinned. “Mom, I don’t know how, but this bacon gets better every day!†His mom giggled. “I guess it’s just a thing. Eat up, you’ve got a big job today!†Jack sat up straighter. He sighed, “Yep, I’ve gotta find a job today!†This was an important day. There was crisis in Jack’s family right now. If they couldn’t come up with enough money by the end of the month, the city would remove them from their home. Jack had to get a job or else his family would be sacked.
Jack inhaled his bacon and headed for the door. His mother said, “You might want to change out of your pajamas first.†Jack blushed and stumbled upstairs. He put on his clothes. He wore a long-sleeved black and white striped shirt and a short sleeved red shirt on top of that. He put on some shorts and a red baseball cap and slung his pack over him. He was set!
Jack headed out of the door, all set. He began walking down the hill to the city. He began thinking, “Where should I start?†All of the sudden, a dark growling noise pierced his ears. He spun around and a runaway dog attacked him. Jack screamed. “What the heck? What’s wrong with this guy?†The dog began chasing him into a neighbors’ yard. The house was abandoned and there was lots of junk out front. Jack stumbled and the dog began to advance. Jack found a cracked bat lying next to him conveniently. The dog jumped up to attack him, but Jack landed a perfectly timed swing. CRACK! The dog was knocked out.
Jack brushed himself off. He began walking towards town again. He couldn’t help but think, “What was up with that dog? Normally the dogs are much nicer here…†He felt something strange was going on. It could not match the strangeness of the next series of events…
That's not how the Force works.
