Hey yall, I’d like to preface this by saying that I’m by far the most unfit person to make a post like this. Due to financial reasons and social/familial pressures, I’ve yet to buy even a single X beyblade. Even so, I wanted to present this argument in hopes that someone else more knowledgable and more appropriate to make this could pick it up. Enjoy!
Why now?
Right now is the launch of the brand new CX line of beyblades, each of which seem to be at around 37-38g — a far cry from BX’s initial range of 32.5-35g.
It’s important to say that weight is absolutely not everything in this game: but it’s still an overall indicator of performance increase. For all you pokemon fans, imagine the weight of a bey like the BST. Yeah, you’ll always find great pokemon with low BST because of their abilities or min-maxed stat distribution, but it’s also true that Psuedo-Legends are very consistently good even if their stats aren’t optimized.
This same principle holds true for Beyblade. Shape and weight distribution can oftentimes matter even more than weight, but on average increasing weight is still an indicator of powercreep.
The new CX line hasn’t seemingly been all too much more powerful than some of our best UX and even BX beys, but I’ll remind you all that this is out initial launch for the system. BX eventually got PhoenixWing and UX eventually got ImpactDrake, CX could potentially be the system to break 40+ grams.
There are problems with CX of course, notably the height, top-heaviness, and apparent breakage issues, but I think it’s only a matter of time before the positives new beys bring outweigh these negatives.
Why should this happen in the first place?
One of the biggest reasons I’d want a format like this are because of some of these new releases. Beys like GhostCircle, ShelterDrake, and GolemRock seem like they’d perfectly slot into an earlier meta, rather than the current meta where 36g acts as a minimum for consistent viability.
It would be nice and refreshing to see a meta where you can more effectively play lighter beys, and one where you could play balance or defense combos which don’t consist of *popular heavy attack blade* + a non-attack centered tip (I’m looking especially at TyrannoBeat). I’d again like to mention that I don’t play or go to tournaments, so I can’t accurately give input here. I don’t know what people play in tournaments usually, I’m mostly basing this on what I usually see in the Winning Combos from X Tournaments thread, which is flawed as a database for this purpose.
Even still, I think we can acknowledge that X has a small problem with what many around me have been calling ‘spamina’, although not necessarily unique to X. What is more unique to X (not really bc of burst but whatever) though is the lack of true defense. Most defensive options have been lagging behind in performance compared to the best attack and stamina options for most of the lifespan of X. Making a “limited” format of sorts allows us to selectively choose what is allowed and what isn’t, allowing us to somewhat equalize the three types. I feel like I’m not explaining this well enough, but hopefully it becomes clear soon.
What would this format be like?
Here’s the basic philosophy for what I’m proposing: we take some of the strongest early X beys and use them as a line for what is and isn’t allowed in the format.
The two beys I’m thinking about specifically are HellScythe and SharkEdge, some of the very earliest releases yet also beys which continue to be somewhat good even now. SharkEdge specifically is still amazing, and I believe HellScythe would be decent if not for Rod and Wolf maintaining a duopoly on the stamina meta.
To me, banning either of these releases would make little sense due to just how early they were released. Instead, we should use them as the performance ceiling for a format like this.
Any BX bey whose performance goes over this line would be banned, and any UX bey whose performance goes under this line would be allowed. For BX, we’d primarily look at banning beys such as PhoenixWing, TyrannoBeat, CobaltDragoon, and WhaleWave. For UX, we’d primarily look at allowing beys like HellsHammer, ShinobiShadow, LeonCrest, Phoenix Rudder, GhostCircle, and even potentially GolemRock. I can’t say for certain which beys should or shouldn’t be allowed (because I don’t play the game 💀), so if people could provide their input especially on this, it would be great.
We’d potentially have HellScythe/PhoenixRudder/GhostCircle for stamina combos, the lower stamina threshold potentially allowing GhostCircle a niche for being a super lightweight bey that could OS the other stamina beys (I’d want to test this, but I think this could be possible). We’d also have LLD as an option for equalization on Elevate or Level.
We’d have SharkEdge, DranSword, and GolemRock as attack options, with other niche options like ViperTail (it would really be TalonPtera) and DranDagger potentially returning. I’d also be excited to see beys with yet untapped potential like HellsHammer or Crimson Garuda in a meta like this. It’d also be nice to have a place for the newer X-Over beys like Xcalibur and Valkyrie to play around in, even with their light weight they still could be options here. Heck, even BlackShell could find a place here as a ratchet buster.
For Defense, LeonCrest would act a premier wall, being very protected from low attack but oftentimes being too top heavy to OS most stamina types. GolemRock could also be here too as a counterattacker. KnightShield with the newer 35g mold is also potentially scary. I almost forgot about HellsChain and UnicornSting, but they’d both be incredibly fun/good. Especially Unicorn, which also has a place in the stamina section.
Conclusion
I don’t know what I’m doing lol! This is just an idea. I can’t claim to be an expert, I don’t truly know when a new official format should come or what that format should look like. I just wanted to bring this possibility to all of you now, before we start getting our 40g+ CX beys!
I really think now is an opportunity to create a format which preserves older X beys, and which is more balanced than any X meta has been before. In all honesty, I’ve kinda wanted something like this since PhoenixWing and especially after WizardRod. Both are completely fine in a modern context I think, but they came out prematurely. They were too good for their times and really overshadowed other options for a long time.
If anyone wants to correct me or add anything, please do! Again, I’m no expert, but I just want to see some movement on this happening so that at least when I watch BBX it can be more fun! :D
Edit: By the way, I am aware that CX has been seen as somewhat underwhelming (at least for the launch), but I think they’re still relative to beys above HS and SE, and the line as a whole will get stronger with time. It’s unlikely that TT would launch the system without plans for future ways to powercreep it even a little.
