Anyone likes it? Anyone even knows it here?
Horrorpunk!
Maybe you should talk about it a bit?
First I wanted to see if there is somebody who already knows it.
But basically - yes you're right.
Horrorpunk. It's music just like b-movies.
First band in it ever was the Misfits. Today's Misfits are pure carp and I don't want to comment on them any further here.
Since in the initial Misfits the singer and songwriter Glenn Danzig was the one and only mastermind, the whole story is basically his idea. He liked horror movies and disliked the majority's ideals he combined the things founding a punk band. They told stories about evil, undead and manslaughter, hiding messages and morals in it. Since they started in 1977, they pretty much co-founded the whole punk music style. But when many punk bands evolved into the more complex Hardcore punk, Misfits stayed with their simple melodies and catchy lines.
And these aspects are the most recognizable things about Horrorpunk. The melodies are always pretty melodic and kind of "flowing".
Then, in 1984, Misfits were dead and gone. In the mid-90's, Misfits-coverbands started to play again and got a growing amount of fans.
Of course in the meantime there were things like TSOL's sometimes pretty creepy punk songs or The Damned and of course Gothic Rock and Death Rock, which were also hugely influenced by Glenn Danzig ideas. But something like horrorpunk didn't come back until these middle 90's.
Then, coverbands dared to write and play their own songs, and their fans liked it.
Until now, more and more horrorpunk bands were started. Among them are unfortunately many many bad misfits-copies. But some good bands were able to do their own style.
Today, there are many different niches that come together in Horrorpunk. Many bands are influenced by Psychobilly, where the lyrics are quite similar to the ones in Horrorpunk. Other bands take Horrorpunk to higher speed and more brutality in the sound. Others concentrated on mid-tempo catchiness with lots of "oooooohhh"- and "whoooooooaaaa"- harmonies.
So horrorpunk grew to a bigger genre again, being well-known in today's underground.
But enough said, here's some bands.
BALZAC - famous japanese band. INFAMOUS song Wall
The Other - myspace
Blitzkid - myspace
The Crimson Ghosts - myspace
Los Carniceros Del Norte - myspace
So, as you see, horrorpunk is spread all around the world. Enjoy!
