Mirror's Edge (The concept is amazing and fresh and really exhilarating to play, its just a shame that everything outside of the first person platforming really carp sucks -- especially combat.)
I don't understand all of the hate towards the combat system in Mirror's Edge. What is so bad about it? There is enough variation in my opinion. Besides, the game is clearly not about the combat. It is about the first person platforming, and because of that, it is all that really matters in the game.
Try playing the game on Normal difficulty without using guns. You'll learn pretty quickly why everyone hates the combat in that game.
um isnt using the guns part of the game, is it really fare to criticize the combat while not using an advantage that you should?
(keep in mind i have played 5 minutes of mirrors edge)
Well honestly the game was meant to be played without using the guns. The whole lure of the game is that you are someone who can perform near superhuman maneuvers to take out your enemies and to scale the environment. When you pick up a gun it COMPLETELY slows you down and limits your freedom to move around the obstacles in the environment, which breaks the flow of the game. Not to mention there is a trophy/achievement for playing through the game without ever shooting an enemy. Its almost as if EA/DICE were encouraging people to avoid combat, and I think that was the original intent for the game but they felt they had to add in a shooting mechanic to help sell the game. (Which didn't end up working out so well for them lol)
Granted, they encourage you to avoid enemy encounters altogether but there are multiple occasions where this isn't possible. If it were possible to run through the entire game without ever being forced to fight then it would be fine, but the problem is that you
are forced to fight, numerous times. Often the best course of action is to just disarm the enemies and keep running, but there's problems there as well because the hit detection in the game is wonky as hell and a lot of times you will know with
absolute certainty that you timed your disarm correctly and yet the enemy will still drop you in two pistol whips. Its retarded.
