The NeoGAF thread speculates that the reason for the PS3 slim is to cut down on production costs. By using a smaller, newer, and cheaper Blu-Ray disc drive (the one on current PS3's are literally like 5x bigger then the newer drives), and using a more efficient hard-drive solution, thus able to slim down the profile. I think it will happen, Sony has done it to all of their main platforms that have been released worldwide (ie, not the Pocket Station, or the PlayStation X). The shot of the box looks too real.
And as you said, a similar logo to that of the one on the mold is appearing on PS3 advertisements. It allows them to create nostalgia as well as allow the logo to be seen by more people (the current logo is just too long to appear, and too long to read).
