Technically most of us (but not all of us) have a "given" name and a "family" name.
In Western countries, this has been shorthanded to first name and last name (or forename and surname) as it is the order in which our culture has placed them (given, and then family). In many cultures in eastern Asia the family name comes before the given name.
But to say that a particular name is "backwards" isn't a very open way to think about things. We are members of a global community here, from many different cultures, and can probably do a bit better than that.
