Sky Sports will pay more than 600 million euros for the rights of the English minor leagues
The British network Sky Sports has acquired the broadcasting rights of the English Football League (EFL, England's minor football divisions) for 595 million pounds (668 million euros) for the period between 2019 and 2024. This agreement It represents an increase of 35% compared to the last agreement they reached.
The channel will broadcast a total of 138 games per season, in addition to all the playoff games and the League Cup final (Carabao Cup , for sponsorship issues).
They will also broadcast fourteen qualifying rounds of the first rounds of the Carabao Cup and the semifinals and the final of the Checkatrade Trophy (a tournament in which the teams from the third and fourth English divisions participate, through direct qualifiers).
Sky is left with an option to increase the number of games broadcast to 158 for the last two years of the deal.
This agreement, as reported by the BBC, has not pleased some historical English football clubs that are now active in the EFL such as Derby County, Leeds United and Aston Villa .
Andrea Radrizzani , owner of Leeds and president of the operator ElevenSports - which owns the rights of the Spanish League in the United Kingdom - criticized the current agreement in the past, considering that the clubs do not receive enough money.
