In 1794, the French Revolution entered its most violent phase, Terror. In the wake of the foreign invasion, the French government declared a state of emergency, and many foreign nationals living in France were arrested, including the American reformist Thomas Paine, for his British-born birth. Although the U.S. Secretary of State In France, Gouverneur Morris was unable to secure Paine's release, and Morris was able to meditate successfully on behalf of many other Americans imprisoned during the Terrorism, including American Consuls in Dunkirk, Rouen, and Le Havre. When the Terror ended in late July 1794, the arrest was over, and Paine, who was scheduled to be executed, was released. To know more about The French Revolution timeline click here.
