I am quite certain it can be written "spelt" as well. That is what I was always taught at school, along with "spelled". Just like "burned" and "burnt".
I'm pretty sure spelt is just common vernacular.
Burnt is the past participle of Burned, I believe.

I do not know : a lot of my books had also stated that both "burned" and "burnt" could be used for Simple past, as well as for perfect tenses. Obviously I am just a francophone learning English, however all my references have told me this before.
