This is NOT based off of HSoTD. I had this idea a while before I saw the anime. Besides, the plot line is DEFINITELY different. You'll see
As usual, I will start with a 'prologue sneak preview' of sorts.

I always believed that extinction was part of the natural order of things.
Then again, I never believed that this would happen to the human race. I though we would be the final race of beings, the ones that made it. Dinosaurs had their time, but eventually it passed. The ice age creatures had their time, but it passed. We've had our time...
Now ours would pass.
*From ??? POV*
"I've done it, sir!" I exclaimed. Smiling gayly, I held the small tube of glowing, sparkling, greenish liquid up with a trembling hand. I was sweating, but ecstatic. I was going to be famous! I was a legend! "Look!" I said again, My co-scientists looking on at me, beaming. "I've found the solution that will save humanity! One sip will cause aging of the heart to cease! Heart attacks, cancer, all of this will disappear! I've done what others have only dreamed about! I've created eternal life!" I began to tremble all over, feeling weak at the knees. My fellows clapped and applauded me, and the boss beamed. "We will all become rich beyond our wildest dreams!" He shouted in a gruff voice. He laughed, then stopped. He turned and looked at me. "But," He began. "How do we know this cure of yours works?" I wobbled. "Um...we could...test it?" He grinned. "Very well." He 360'd to another scientist. "Robert!" He shouted. "It's time for your medicine!" A little unsure, but exited, Robert stood up. Trembling, he hastened over to us. I looked him in the eyes. "You will live forever." I said. And with that, he drank up.
Oh, how wrong I was. Without knowing it, I had created the beginning...of the end
