I was just curious as to whether a friend of mine could come to a tournament as a spectator, if so would they need to pay to get in still?

If an event requires a venue fee, I think it only applies to players. If you're planning to go to an event where you need to pay a fee, ask the host to clarify if the fee applies only to players or everyone that shows up.
