The Golden Nightmare
Michael backed into a corner of the classroom, It was a large portable and the blinds were always covered, making it dark. It was perfect place for kids to break the rules. Hiding himself from everyone else, Michael didn’t want to draw any attention. Miss Bleater, his English teacher, called out his name as soon as he had settled into his seat. The whole class turned their heads towards him, like deer suddenly startled by a noise in the woods. They looked hostile, as if Michael belonged to another world.
Michael had a flash back of what his life had been. Michael looked perfectly normal, even better than normal actually; he was one Ms Bleater’s favourite student. He dressed well, with neat hair cut into a fringe and he wore a blazer and a tie every day. He was the brightest student in the whole of year 7. Where he was different was his personality. He was always isolated by his peers and was shy and nervous about every single deed in his day. He was shunned and bullied by the people he should be calling friends and worst of all he felt like a tool. His father ran the largest oil company in the southern hemisphere and his mother was the owner of a shipping company, so they went together naturally. he was the son of billionaires but his parents wanted him to lead a normal life and not be pressured by his parent’s riches even though he was heir to the company. He remembered the day his parents had confronted him in his room, they had told him that they wanted him to lead a normal life; to try and fit in as best as possible so that he could have and so they gave him a bike for him to ride to school every day and make him fit in. this had the opposite effect of what their parents wanted and every day he fell further into the impending darkness he had brought upon himself he resented coming to school and hated every day of his life.
Michael’s English lesson had finally ended. He was making his way towards his lockers and walking past the school gym. It was a massive complex which could accommodate pretty much every sport thinkable of, if it was paired with their stadium and had enough equipment to hold the Olympics with, after all this was the largest secondary school in Michael’s country.

A large mob of year boys suddenly stalked out like desert hyenas circling in for the kill from behind him. He turned his head and let out a scream of terror even though it was hardly audible and sounded more like a whimper, the leader of the mob, rather short but muscular person for his age had run straight at Michael and pinned him to a wall.
“You’re the rich kid aren’t you?†snorted out the mob leader, his face contorted into a sneer. Michael remained silent, the mob leader’s grip was slowly crushing Michael’s arms and his breath had left him when he had been pinned to the wall.
“My name is Steven and don’t you forget that! I know you’re the rich kid so don’t try and be smart with me†said the mob leader in much the same manner as before.
Slowly Steven’s grip slackened and Michael fell to the concrete, too weak to do anything else. “Now listen up, you’re gonna bring us a $1000 each and if you don’t were gonna make your life hell. Steven said this with a steely coldness that etches out the fact the he was serious.

Michael slowly rose to his feet, he had just woken up and was dazed from his collision with the wall. He checked the time; it was 6:30pm. His parents would be worried sick about how late he was. Michael rushed to the bike stand beside the school’s newly installed state-of-the-art science lab and grabbed his bike, he then slowly made the 12km ride homewards...

Michael woke up with a start. He was worried about the day that lay ahead. He slowly glanced about him and after breakfast he made his way to school on his bike. Around halfway there, he saw Steven trudging up the road and quickly raced away, in fear of his predicament, he soon arrived at his school and eventually forgot about the events of the day before.

Lunch arrived and Michael was actually enjoying himself for once, he had done well in all his subjects and he had actually made a friend, actually he had made quite a few friends, he had gained their support from his classmates because of is help and kindness and for once he felt as if he was not being used as a tool by others. He made his way outside, into the large courtyard surrounded by portables on vey side and bathed in the sun’s bright yellow rays, it seemed that the his day had been too good to be true but Michael immediately erased that idea from his head. Suddenly a sense of dread over took him and even the air seemed to still to allow the feeling to sink in, he slowly turned around, only to see Steven and even more kids in his mob than yesterday.
“You got the money?†Steven grunted.
Michael didn’t know what to say, he didn’t plan anything. One of Michael’s new friends- his name was James, suddenly stepped in;
“You treat Michael with respect!†he shouted, right in Steven’s face.
“What did you just say kid? I’m going to strangle you!
“You ain’t doing anything to James punk, we’ll take you all on,†and suddenly 5 year 12 boys had joined the fray and the tables had turned. Murmurs came from Stevens’s mob and one boy uttered the words;
“I ain’t staying with this loser, we don’t stand a chance,†he then walked to Michael’s side.
The murmurs grew louder and then, like a chain reaction, everyone started Stevens’s side and joining Michael’s until Steven was left standing alone. He quickly turned red and just as he was about to turn away and run, a teacher came out of one of the portables.
“Michael leave poor Steven alone, you can have a detention for your antics.â€She said in flat voice.
It was Michael’s first detention, but for once in his life, he didn’t mind, and he eagerly wet after his teacher, now that Michael had overcome his fear he felt whole and better than ever before, with a grin on his face, Michael strode into the detention room and sat, anticipating what new challenges tomorrow would bring.
