I bought some of the magic the gathering TCG cards because my friend from school plays and i wanted to know if anyone else played. (if enough people actually play i will post my deck)
I used to play back in the Invasion block era, but I lost my Fires deck and never got back into it afterward =/
I stopped playing after Mirrodin. Made an Affinity deck and an Equipment deck. I also had a Zombie Swarm deck that was hella fun to play.
Actually thinking of getting into this. Could use something not as busted as YGO is.
It's only not as busted because they do blocks.

On what grounds?
Block Play: prevents older cards from being used with newer ones.
YGO: Doesn't

EX: DaD not strong on it's own, about 4 or 5 sets back, maybe more. Combined with Teleport...we all know what happened.
Rescue Cat is another prime example of how old cards become broken with new ones. Block play prevents this.
I agree with Fragbait...

Also, this standard format also leads to more money being spent in order to keep up with the current sets.

However, it's very easy to get into the game, since almost any type of deck can be competitive.
yes, yugioh just makes incredibly broken cards, lets them destroy the game for a few months, then bans them when they release lots more incredibly broken cards

the fact that yata garasu was ever even made is disgusting

Konami's doing a much better job of it than Upper Deck did, at least.
We're way off topic though XD

I'm running a deck right now made up of cards I got for free from Wizards from their latest promotion, "Here I Rule". They sent you 2 of 5 30 card sets, each set a different color. I have Blue/Black, and I have 2 old Theme decks that I'm going to dismantle to improve that one.
The only MTG cards I owned was from one of the Starter sets. I did however play with one of my friends decks and I really enjoyed it.

This was probably one of the only TCG's in which I really enjoyed the gameplay. However it has been a very long time since I last played. Would consider picking it up if I wasn't spending so much on another hobby of mine Wink

I used to play yugioh but then i started to feel like it wasn't more about technique but rather who spent the most money on cards. Magic takes a little more strategy mainly because it is designed for older players than yugioh. (the age rating is 13+) But one problem that keeps coming back is that unless you were to make each card different then it will almost always depend on who spends the most money. Also i wouldn't start unless you had someone to play magic with. (happens to me alot i will buy some cards and find out nobody plays) Also before you buy alot of cards play the game at least once. I had my first game last Friday and i got owned i was using a green and red deck and my friend who is 13 and has played magic for 5 years owned me. (i almost one because he wasn't using his actual deck) Also i am close to posting my deck but i have a strange feeling that when i do this thread will die.
i have played magic before and enjoyed it

so in magic you can't use cards from older sets because they are banned?

Technically yes, but not in the YGO sense. In casual play, most people will play by casual rules, i.e. what's in the rulebook.
There are universal bans, which are bans in the YGO sense, such as the Lotuses.
Then, there's the different types of tourney play, and the main one (and the one played on the Pro Circuit) is Block, in which only cards from the current "Block" (set of packs with a unified storyline theme) are legal.
Expect to play Blocks if you go to almost any event, including FNM
magic is also thirty years old

also YGO does the same thing, except instead of banning sets it just makes retardedly overpowered cards that make the old cards completely unusable

also pokemon does the same thing in a "modified" format, lots of card games do this
Not quite 30, haha, but you're not that far off, actually. Came out in 1993. I started playing when I was in 6th grade, so that would have been 1994, around Revised Edition. I stopped collecting somewhere between Weatherlight and Tempest in the Summer of 1997.
