Game of the year 08, you call it!

Yep, you call it. I say metal gear solid 4 hands down. It was just so epic, got many 10s.

The other contenders are Little big planet, Resistance Fall of man 2, Fallout 3, Gears of war 2, Fable 2, GTA4, socom (longshot), and you all can name others if you feel your game isnt there.
Imagine Yoga, Wii Music, Wii Fit, and Alone In The Dark.
I know others will disagree with me but GTA4 is up there in my books. I loved it.
Burnout Paradise isn't GOTY material deserves an honorable mention for sure.
And I'm sure Fable II will be a worthy contender. Same with CoD5.

edit: oh carp i thought it was only for 360
I think its a bit too early to be discussing this, but here are my picks:

Burnout Paradise
No More Heroes (Hmm, this was released December 2007 in Japan, so does it really count?)
Super Smash Bros. Brawl

I haven't played a lot of the obvious games you guys will pick, but all three of those were great games. As for some GOTY speculation...

Fable II, I haven't payed attention to this game much, but the first was great
Mirror's Edge, it looks flipping amazing.
and dare I say... Mega Man 9, yes, Mega Man 9. I'm sorry, but this game looks like its going to be amazing. Its a BIG longshot for GOTY though lol
mgs4 carp sucked

so far? uhh i dunno. nothing great so far (for me at least)

The games that I think MIGHT sweep the award (for me personally) are:

1. Mirror's Edge - I have been looking forward to this game since I first read about it many EGM's ago, when nothing was known save for the title of the game and one single screen shot. The shot was of Faith, the main character, sliding down the side of a glass building (click for the image -- its stunning) and I don't know what it was about that shot, but something just captivated me and since then I've seen nothing to deter me from getting this game -- it just keeps getting better every time its shown. While it utilizes industry standards such as platforming and a first person perspective, it takes these ideas and puts a very unique spin on them by not only COMBINING them to make what is essentially a first person platformer, but also in that the platforming serves as a means of puzzle solving. There are various routes throughout each level and its completely up to the player which route they choose, but each route is laid out in very subtle yet effective color codes to designate which routes are the toughest and vice versa. This is without a fraction of a doubt the game I'm most looking forward to playing this year. Here's hoping it doesn't let me down when it finally releases.

2. Rock Band 2 - Rock Band 1 is easily my most played game this generation. I'm playing it constantly and I've even racked up more play time in this game than I have with console staples like Halo 3 and CoD4. Rock Band 2, while essentially more of the same, is adding all kinds of little tweaks that will make the game that much more enjoyable, like online Band World Tour and the Battle of the Bands mode. The fact that solo careers are no longer just a stroll through a list of songs is just icing on the cake. But the real nail in the coffin is the fact that I'm going to have 80-some odd new songs to master on expert drums here in about two weeks, along with the slew of new DLC. I can't carp wait.

3. Fable 2 - I fell in love with the first Fable and Fable 2 seems to be taking everything that was great about the first game and making it better, while also trimming away all that was bad. The new drop-in/drop-out online co-op sounds AMAZING, particularly the bits where any player who comes into your world can completely change the fate of your world and its surroundings from their behavior. Fable was more or less the first RPG to get the "player choice/player freedom" right, and I have no reason to believe Fable 2 won't continue that.

4. Left 4 Dead - 4 player online co-op. Rabid zombies. I need not say anymore.

5. Prince of Persia - It looks amazing aesthetically and the gameplay and setting are very interesting. This isn't my top pick, but I definitely think this will be one of the more memorable games of this year.

As for games that have already come out this year that I think were impressive/could take the award:

- Burnout Paradise
- GTA IV
- MGS4 (Not a personal pick, but I think this game will win a lot of GOTY 2008 awards)
- Braid (Its an XBLA title so I'm not really sure if it qualifies, but its definitely been one of the best games I've played this year.)
I say gta4
Rock Band 2 for me. Music is love. But not that carp hippie love that the Beatles talk about.
chrono trigger ds
im getting chrono trigger to see what those rabid rpg fans keep raving about. also, im sorry but we sorta have to count any music game out for overall GOTY. i just cant see guitar hero/rock band getting it. tbh if i had to cut it to top 4 id say MGS4/GTA4/Fallout 3 ( best in show e3)/gears of war 2 ( i can only see serious xbot sites giving it to gears but regardless looks great). tbh its gonna be mgs4. it was just perfect according to most sites, got 10 in game informer, 9.9 ign, and many were let down by the other 10 scoring game, GTA4 so its kinda a no brainer.
Hmm current games;

- GTA IV
- Metal Gear Solid 4
- Super Smash Bros Brawl

Future games;

- EA Skate 2
- Mirrors Edge
- Fallout 3
- Little Big Planet
- Resistance 2
- Fable 2
Super smash bros Brawl, I really need to get my wii hooked to the interwubz so I can fight more people. Kirby FTW!

These are supposed to be our own personal picks for game(s) of the year, are they not?

What makes a music game any less of a "game" than any of the other titles you listed? You're still pressing buttons to complete objectives and still, you know, having fun. In terms of innovation, Rock Band and GH: World Tour are two of the biggest titles to come out this generation. They're both bringing completely fresh and new ideas to gaming. What's wrong with commending them for that? Just because they aren't traditional games doesn't disqualify them.

I could understand your argument if we were picking carp like Imagine Babyz or any of the garbage non-games that have come out for Wii, but we aren't, so...
I expect Gears 2 to be amazing.
Hmm, I'm guessing Super smash bros Brawl. Why don't you make a poll for ppl to take.
N+, SPOGS Racing, Chicken Shoot, Kidz Sports Hockey, Imagine Rockstar.

Guitar Hero and Rock Band made people care about music again. It's also helped bring many classic bands back and introduce them to a new generation. I didn't listen to half the bands I do know before I started playing the series. I've also found a good number of up and coming bands that are pretty decent from the series.
no the music games will definitely be great. but i just cant see ign or game informer giving them general game of the year. theres always competetion. but yeah for personal picks i would say resistance 2. 8 player coop online, 60 player battles, and that huge leviathan is awesome. also, all the ps3 owners on here (including roan and artie) are getting resistance 2 day 1? right? RIGHT?
Ugh shut up this is exactly why everyone got frustrated with you the last time you were on the board.

We understand that you like the PS3 and Sony. Stop carp chest-beating. Its really annoying.
I would say MGS4 personally, I loved it. But I'm not serious enough to play a lot of the games nominated above.

Burnout is possible, esp the DLC which is awsome. But still I find it isn't that polished...

GTAIV is walking away with stuff for SURE, but I think I prefer SA. With all the sales records it broke, you could say it already won.

Counting eggs before the hatch, I would love to see Mirrors Edge win. Little Big Planet too, while im not sure I'll pick it up. Motorstorm 2 should be good. TBH R2 i ain't not excited.
