Science Fiction Story
3rd Draft

I woke up in a fit. It was sweltering hot. The geothermal power was down. It was supposedly the most reliable source of energy, the president of the United States had announced back in 2078. After the coming of the wind, it was time for the waves. I know that the waves were coming, always ready to attack, to crush us with their mighty hands, and to fill us up with water, to sweep us away and to swallow us up into darkness. You must be prepared, said my mother before she was swept away. Look to where the waves are each morning, for you must be prepared for them. My parents’ voices ring clearly in my head, and I know what to do. I hear the waves. There is no mistaking it. They are coming.

Walking outside onto the balcony, I see the waves. Lapping up at me, but yet never reaching me. I know that they would eventually reach me. It was just a matter of time. Looking down again, the waves of blue, with each smash against the building a wash of white came down. The waves are destroying the building, tearing away at the paint and the walls, punching them with all of its might to destroy it, remove it, crush it with its mighty hands, reaching in to each house, and taking everything away. I can hear muffled screams, screams of terror, from the people being taken, to be missing forever. Not that there would be anybody left to miss anybody. I have to escape this attack. I must survive, so I stay strong and grow up and get a good job. But after this there may not even be any people to work for. I must protect Hong Kong, and most importantly, avenge my parents. I start packing my things into my backpack. Time is not on my side. As I pack, memories start replaying themselves.

The waves started moving into around 1 month ago. The astrologists had predicted a coming of the waves, but nobody had ever thought that it would arrive so quickly. It was reported that a mad scientist called The Professor was encouraging the waves to turn on us. The Professor had already conquered all of Europe, Africa, Australia and even the Americas. He had taken over most of Asia, and now his only target is Hong Kong. Then the flooding began. Places near the shore were flooded; buildings and people were washed away and never to be seen again. All that was left of the place was flat land that could be used for building. The Professor had taken over all the places on the shores. He was not going to stop. He used the waves to change the land, and moved all the good land away, not wanting it to be destroyed. It was like an apple, eating the outside into the inside. As for me, I live on the Peak. My house is near the center of Hong Kong Island, so The Professor cannot attack and capture my place immediately. With every day, a part of Hong Kong was becoming part of The Professor’s empire.

A deafening crash pulls me from my memories. The waters are rising up, like a huge pillar. I can just see the top of the monster wave, a few meters away from me. I spend too much time thinking. They are around 1 floor below me, I can hear the sound of the waves smashing the things in the house. I zip up my beloved backpack. There’s no time to pack anything more. My parents always told me that whenever faced with an extreme problem, my 5-year old body would let my 1-year old mind take control and I would panic. It’s happening right now.

The waves begin to attack. They lunge at me, their giant hands swarming into the house. They spread into each corner, surrounding me. All I can hope is that they have mercy on me. More hands come in, spreading all over the house. My grip on my backpack is loose. The monster wants it. I reach for it, but it is gone. Swept away. It doesn’t matter. I have to survive. Life is more important than a backpack. All the other things are being taken, my pens, my clothes, and my toys. I hear zapping noises. My alarm clock! They use energy cells that cannot touch water! I have to get out of here. I am in serious danger.

I swim out of the house, up, up to the roof of the building. I can see the wind turbines and the metal dragons, their heads barely above water. My goal is to reach the top of the highest head. The water is still a few meters above the building, and the whole city is underwater. I have to reach the top, to escape this huge monster. I have to believe in myself. I can do this. I keep swimming. The monster is crushing me. I can’t handle this any longer. I’m nearly at the top, but I’m dying.

I am at the top. My pain has been relieved. But I can’t feel anything. I don’t feel any success. I can move anywhere. Wait. I’m a human being. I can’t fly! I look into the water. I see a boy there, about the same age as me. I move toward it. I shout to him, “COME ON! GET OUT OF THE MONSTER! YOU CAN DO IT!” He has the same clothes as me. He is still, unmoving. His face has a pained expression. But it doesn’t change. It seems as if he has been frozen in time. Then it hits me. That’s my body. I’m dead.

Suddenly I feel myself being drawn back inside to my body. I take a deep breath in. I open my eyes, and I am still fighting towards the top. I have just glimpsed the future. I have to make sure that doesn’t happen. I have air, now I can kick up, up, and to the top. I pass the first two dragons. I see the last one. I can do this. I squeal in excitement. I’m going to survive. I stop. I have no more air. I squealed it all out. My lungs are burning. I am drinking litres of water. I push. My lungs can’t stand it. This pain… It’s unbearable.

The pain goes away. I can’t feel anything again. Oh no, please. Not this. It can’t be. No. Not this. I can’t change it now. I was warned, but I did not heed it and use it. Now, I’m dead.

The ending is quite meh though, Uncertain
