DragonballZ Kai... 4KIDS!?!

I just recently watched it's debut on CW4Kids. We all know 4Kids are evil, but to screw with this? Why even get the rights to show it if you're going to massacre it?
There were 2 really big cuts.

1. Raditz scares the farmer upon his landing the farmer has a gun (yes boys and girls a real gun some form of rifle I believe) and yes Raditz obviously catches the bullet from the farmer, but when he goes to flick it back it's a glowing little pellet of energy (looked like a hamster food pellet from Hamtaro glowing blue) And instead of blowing the car up like every other energy blast would have he still makes the bullet hole in it.

2. Master Roshi's glass. This one really bothered me. Okay it's a bullet it's violent imagery. Master Roshi's clear glass of yellowy brown foaming liquid is changed to a glass of white liquid. The man is HOW OLD? Kids aren't going to realize he's at least 80+ something and can therefore drink Beer? Or they could have called it Ginger Ale in the re-dub, but no they changed it.

Both of these are so glaring and out of place you can see the edit lines around each change. As the series continues I plan on adding more posts to this topic to attempt and vent my anger.

I mean this series is always going to have a special place in my heart because of Anime North 2010. My friends were sleeping it off and I got there at like 8am. I grabbed a coffee of some italian blend walked around found a viewing of Dragonball Z Kai and sat in there drinking my coffee until they woke up. This was just so weird to me to be spending a Sunday morning in the dark with strangers drinking coffee and watching anime. That it fit me to a tee. (Made some new friends watching it too due to the dialogue and the Abridged take on it was being shouted along side of it).
I think this accurately sums up my feelings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWaLxFIVX1s

But seriously? I'm not surprised. Go 4Kids! And give my regards to Saint Peter. Or whoever has his job, but in Hell.
As if they didn't do a bad enough job with One Piece...

If they don't make reference to OVER 9000! in the dub (and I will make sure) I'm starting a riot.

And like most riots,it will be a very intelligent and reasonable way to express my opinion(especially in this case).
I thought DBK was Funimation dubbed? Kyle Hebert said so on his official Facebook

It is. The dubbing the character voices are done by Funimation. HOWEVER 4kids edited these scenes. I saw the first few episode strictly done by Funimation at Anime North 2010 and the edits are so very obvious it's frightening.

Look at the schedule on the main page here if you all have issues with taking my word on it. I was watching 5D's and that's how I found out about it.
I've mentioned the CW broadcast in the DragonBall Kai thread, IIRC.

At the end of the day, it's either air the show edited, or don't air the show at all. The CW is a broadcast network, as such it has to deal with the FCC, who have strict guidelines about what can, and what can't, be shown on children's television. Violence against humans is the big one, which is why in future episodes you'll likely see some zoom ins, or some flashes to lessen the impact of punches and kicks. Realistic guns are a huge no-no, hence the laser (even if it doesn't make a lick of sense). It's not some much a 4Kids thing, as it is a US thing.

4Kids seem to want to turn a new leaf, as next month they'll be launching a web portal called Toonzaki.com that'll be the home to a bunch of uncut anime series in English, and Japanese. Naruto, and Ghost In The Shell are two of the third party shows the picked up for Toonzaki, if you can believe it. It also seems they'll be offering an uncut version of each of the anime series they still have left (which isn't a lot, it's basically the Yu-Gi-Oh! stuff, Sonic X, and Doremi).

The CW broadcast is only an attempt to allow Kai to reach as large an audience as possible. It seems that in the US Cartoon Network passed on Kai, (despite Z being one of their highest rated programs during its tenure) and Funimation were forced to seek out alternative venues. One venue was the digital cable channel, Nicktoons. But being a digital cable channel, Nicktoons doesn't have the largest of reaches. To help fix that, in addition to the Nicktoons broadcast (Nicktoons isn't regulated by the FCC btw), they sold the broadcast rights to the show to 4Kids, and got it on their Saturday morning television block (this version seems to be the only version of Kai that'll air up here, as no Canadian broadcaster picked up Kai for the fall season). That said, even the Nicktoons version of Kai is edited from what it is on DVD/Blu-Ray and in Japan. All blood has either been removed, or recoloured, Roshi's mug had its content changed to look like milk (which given his regular form's frail state, isn't a bad idea), Guldo being beheaded was slightly altered, etc. All these edits were to comply to Nicktoons broadcast and standards practises, as 4Kids version was done to comply with the FCC, and the CW's broadcast and standards. At the end of the day, all of these edits do go through Funimation and Toei for approval, and neither seem to care much as long as the show does well on TV. The editing of the series is very much like the 1996 dub of Z (which was done to comply with the FCC).

Kai isn't really the show to complain about editing anyways. As in Japan, and every home release of Kai, it has been edited for content compared to Z (the source of Kai's animation), and the manga. So in a way, the Nicktoons version of Kai is an edit of an edit, and thus the CW version is an edit, of an edit, of an edit. But even then, it doesn't matter much. DragonBall is, and always was, a children's show. What they're doing is making the show accesible to children. At least the kids of today are getting a version of the show with a faithful script, back in 2000, I wasn't so lucky. We got insane things about how characters who were clearly dead managed to escape in time in some parachute never seen on screen, not to mention all the plot and character re-adjustments Z's dub had. At least with these kids, they're still getting the story and characters across. If anyone really wants to see Kai in its "uncut" glory, there's Blu-Rays, and DVDs for that.

With that wall of text done with, this reminds me I should make a thread about Super Saiya-jin Zetsumetsu Keikaku, or The Plan To Eradicate The Super Saiyans. A remake to an infamous DragonBall OVA originally released in 1993, that's going to be included in Raging Blast 2.

TLDR- What 4Kids is doing is mondo cool.
Considering they basically rewrote One Piece because they didn't like the plot... yeeeeeeeeeeeeah.
They stopped Vegeta eating parts of a humanoid insect race he killed. That's not so bad, but they turned Mr. Popo blue and while I realize there is a FANTASTIC reason for doing so it bothers me.
They turned Popo blue? Hahahahaha. I know why they did that, but still, hahaha.

EDIT-

HAHAHAHA

It's not I saw the uncut blu-ray at Anime North. I think they even cut my favourite line out so far.

Piccolo to Gohan: Take off your Tunic.. *evil smile watchng him*
Gohan: O-Okay... *is crying as he's taking it off*

That's on the blu-ray for sure, but I think they cut it out from the broadcast.
Haven't seen the 4kids! Version yet..
But the one thing that bothers me about DBZK
It's not in HD like they said. It looks like the exact same on my tv as it did back then.
The only thing HD is the Intro(Which actually looks cooler than the show itself)

On a side note: America's(4Kid's mainly) to kid-Friendly.

I don't believe the Toonzai broadcast of Kai is in HD. But the Nicktoons one is IIRC. Kai is produced in HD.

Which is strange because I've been watching it on WGNHD so they could infact broadcast in HD.
That's an issue on 4Kids end, they don't have the capacity to broadcast in HD yet. Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds, Kai, and a few other shows they have were created with HD versions.
They edited out Gohan's eye bruise and made one eye substantially bigger than the other turning him into some sort of monster and they changed SPIRIT BOMB to SPIRIT BLAST and it just seems wrong to me.
Blast isn't that bad, Genki Dama (which is what Goku says in Japanese for that move) literally means Spirit Ball, or Spirit Energy. If they had to censor that, I would have went with Spirit Ball, since it would be an accurate translation.

As for Gohan, did he look like he did when Turles was holding him back from transforming back in the 90's with the edited version of Tree of Might?

You'd have to show me a picture. I have no idea I only saw parts of that and only once when YTV first aired it. I am referring to the swollen part above his right eye he sustained after falling in the river. His entire eyeball was swollen outward instead of the giant lump.

I knew what he said in Japanese, but I had no idea what it meant. However with it clearly not being a blast and an orb Spirit Ball is much better as a name for it.
I didn't see Gohan getting his Piccolo outfit... it's almost as if they cut out a section of the anime it's very strange and with Yamcha losing to the Saibaman the dialogue is changed slightly, but nothing worth a fit over. I'm still watching this second episode.
Chaotzu is like Edward Cullen, or so I hear.

Umm more like a princess he glows quite strange (offset on his eyes and I think I saw some in his ear?) and there are little sparkles that rain down after her explodes on Nappa in a big pink cloud.. the sparkles look like more bad edits.... This is just mockery now...
