Wizard (ウィザード, Uizādo) is a Layer Base released by Takara Tomy as part of the Burst System as well as the Gatinko Layer System. It debuted in Japan with the release of the B-139 Starter Wizard Fafnir Ratchet Rise Sen on April 27th, 2019.
==Description==
Takara Tomy's Wizard, like its predecessor Geist Fafnir, is a Stamina Type Layer Base that features a triangular perimeter and three side profile dragon heads with an "F" along each, meant to represent Fafnir, son of the dwarf king Hreidmar. As part of the Gatinko Layer System, Wizard is meant to be compatible with Layer Weights and Left/Dual Spinning Gatinko Chips.
Wizard also features gimmicks: The first is that this Layer is meant to spin Left, opposite to most other Beyblades. The second is that the "F"s are made of rubber, akin to both its predecessor and the L-Drago II Clear Wheel from Metal Fight Beyblade. The inclusion of rubber aids in this Layer's ability to equalize spin with a Right-Spin opponent.
While the triangular shape and rough perimeter of Wizard may imply recoil, the Left-Spin nature of this Layer reduces recoil against a Right-Spin opponent. When spinning slower than a Right-Spin opponent, the rubber "F"s of Wizard allows for Spin-Equalization, where the Layers of two opposite spinning Beyblades work akin to gears and equally distribute their spin, by acting as a cushion against impact, increasing friction between Layers, acting as a "hook" for the other Beyblade to catch into and propel Wizard faster and reducing recoil to increase the rate of contact. Due to the greater exposed surface area of the rubber, the effect is more prominent than in Drain Fafnir, though the greater weight makes the effect far less pronounced against lightweight opponents.
When against a Left-Spin opponent, Wizard cannot equalize spin and the rubber will instead act as brakes. If the opponent has less Burst Resistance than Wizard, then the friction can potentially Burst the opponent. However, if the opponent has greater Burst Resistance than Wizard, the friction of the rubber can cause a Wizard Combination to Self-Burst or severely lose Stamina.
There are 2 molds of Wizard: the original which debuted on the original Wizard Fafnir, which exposes extremely little teeth of a Gatinko Layer Base to the extent it simply slides, and the updated version which debuted in Random Booster Vol. 17, which exposes slightly more teeth than the original, therefore the latter mold is preferred for Wizard-based combinations.
==Use in Spin-Equalisation Combinations==
Wizard can be used in the Spin-Equalisation Combination Wizard Fafnir/Diabolos 1/Longinus/Spriggan 00 Proof/Expand Atomic/Bearing/Destroy/Destroy' Goku/Zan. The heavy weight distribution of Diabolos I/Goku/Zan and 00's weight distribution helps increase Wizard's precession time. The heavy weight of 00 will bolster Knock-Out Defense. Atomic/Bearing/Destroy/Destroy' will supply the Precession needed to Out-Spin the opponent while the Left-Spin nature of Wizard will reduce recoil against a Right-Spin opponent. When using Destroy' specifically, the increased Burst Resistance of the tip's thick spring can be useful as it will allow Wizard to handle impacts that would otherwise Burst it in battle, especially when against Left-Spin Attack Combinations utilisng Zwei.
==Overall==
While Wizard can be good at spin stealing, the initial mold's poor Burst Resistance as well as its aggressive design makes it similar to Geist Fafnir in terms of flaws, though the lack of metal gives it more consistent spin times. It is eventually outclassed by Lord, which can do the same while holding better Burst Resistance, and its successors Mirage (due to it being usable with Double Chassis to increase its equally poor Burst Resistance exponentially) and Vanish (which is thick enough to withstand its own Recoil). The presence of Lord in the GT format also prevents Wizard from excelling there either.
As such, Wizard is meant for Collection Purposes only.
