1v1 to 4 with PhoenixWing5-60E

Recently I went to a 1v1 first to 4 tournament at a local shop, and spent quite a bit of time thinking about what was going to be the most common opponent I would face. WizardRod is almost always in tournament winning decks, and I should have also expected the amount of CobaltDragoons seen as well; where there is a Rod, there is a Rod-killer. Not wanting to have the expected counter, I built 2 of the big bad Wizards (WR9-60B and WR1-60R) and spent WEEKS testing different combos to either knock out or outspin the Wiz, with limited success. Then i managed to snag a TideWhale with the Elevate bit, and had a huge breakthrough with PhoenixWing in testing.

It’s a heavy hitter capable of getting knockouts early, but with the way the bit is designed it’s capable of significant spin endurance after it loses attack power. Depending on launch style, you can burn out for a few X-dashes early or set yourself up to NEVER dash and turn an attack Bey into a stamina type. The 5-60 Ratchet spreads out the weight with an uneven distribution, increasing spin and staying low to avoid ratchet snipes.

And it worked like a charm! WizardRod was a constant threat, and the CobaltDragoons I faced were built to beat them; Phoenix would pocket the Rods and the reverse pattern spin of Dragoon kept throwing the Beys directly into each other, either pocketing the Dragoon or out-spinning them. I even managed to out-spin Rod several times, the heavy early impacts forcing its sides into the stadium to drain stamina.

I ended up going 4-2 in the first round, the two losses being one for Phoenix and one for my TyrannoBeat, which i immediately replaced back with PhoenixWing.

Second round went the more traditional 3v3 route, and Phoenix stayed together as my ace which turned out to be the best decision I could make. It only lost me 1 point in the second heat, while winning me over 9. I ended up winning first, and it felt so surreal!

Everyone I played against was an amazing opponent, and I can’t wait to attend more events! Hopefully I’ll have something else spicy to bring alongside Phoenix next time.
