The episode seems to have a different change of setting and a shift in tone, well... a little. I doubt Shu is dead, Red Eye's could very well be Shu training Valt to become a better match for him after seeing his appalling performance when they lost Free. I think Burst is a bit too light to have death in it if I'm honest. The episode is pretty good though, since it gives us something different.

EDIT: Also, maybe it's because I can't see the dialogue but Valt and his friends don't seem to show that much reaction to his supposed death, they don't even look like they're trying to heavily deny the fact he died too.

Well, when someone you know well actually dies, you don't convey much emotion at first or even feel intense levels of grief and sorrow because you are still trying to figure out what the hell is going on. But yeah, I don't believe Shu is dead. Rather, I think Shu is metaphorically dead,
in the sense of memory wipes and stuff, similar to Toby in the Metal Saga.
