Nintendo 2DS - Kai Hiwatari - Aug. 28, 2013

http://kotaku.com/introducing-the-nintendo-2ds-no-thats-not-a-typo-1214807721

A friend of mine just sent this to me,

I am very confused as to what the point of it is really.
To me, while it is $40.00 cheaper than the 3DS, it is much less portable and looks like the screens will get scratched/dirty much easier.

Opinions?

RE: Nintendo 2DS - RagerBlade - Aug. 28, 2013

Eh... It looks very weird. It's like they went back and made an advanced game boy advanced (lol).

RE: Nintendo 2DS - Annoying-Fork - Aug. 28, 2013

I'm not gonna dis a VERY NICHE product because, well, completely different form factor.

We should have a play and go case.... or no buy (not the neoprene sleeve)

Lol that is exactly what it looks like.

Even if there is a case though, it still is not as portable.

RE: Nintendo 2DS - DefStamina88 - Aug. 28, 2013

Seriously? 2DS? Are you going back in time again, Nintendo? Stop watching Back to the Future.

But seriously though, name's pretty dumb, but I like the design and idea. Pretty straightforward and simple, just as I like it. Grin

RE: Nintendo 2DS - Leone19 - Aug. 28, 2013

So its a bad-looking, higher quality DS? From what I understand, it plays 3DS games but only in 2D? I guess its a cheaper alternative to buying a 3DS/XL, but its kind of ridiculous, to me.

Same here, I like the simple look. But it looks a lot less portable, not much of a problem with me, as I tend to go on short trips and without my ds.

RE: Nintendo 2DS - pyrus10000 - Aug. 28, 2013

Hm, this looks pretty interesting. I honestly don't use 3D on my 3DS XL anyways, but I'm pretty used to a standard DS/3DS/XL positioning. Nintendo's introduction video makes it look somewhat interesting, but currently, I'm not too interested. I thought this was a joke when I first saw it. c:

EDIT: New Avatar! C:

... I use the word "interesting" too much.

Read the story. The 2DS is being released to coincide with the launch of the latest Pokémon games so that fans who haven't yet bought a 3DS can pick up this product instead of the real thing.

RE: Nintendo 2DS - The Supreme One - Aug. 28, 2013

Just...why? It looks so weird to hold because it's slanted lol

RE: Nintendo 2DS - Annoying-Fork - Aug. 28, 2013

I actually wish they marketed it as an alternative device and -NOT- a 3DS variant.... What is wrong with calling the 2DS "DS Tablet"? It would not deter from the targeted age range.

RE: Nintendo 2DS - akio314 - Aug. 28, 2013

I might just buy one to trade on Pokemon to GET ALL DA POKES!

RE: Nintendo 2DS - Annoying-Fork - Aug. 29, 2013

Me: I don't get it, let's call this a DS Tablet instead, that'll be more truth in advertising.... Which Nintendo is mostly careful about.

Reply: Why do people think this is a tablet? Just because it doesn't fold?

Me: Then what do you propose we call it? A Non-Closing Clamshell? A Flip-Slate? A Turnstile Wedge? Da***?

People are giving this Nintendo 2DS deal a hard time and it’s bonkers.

Other than the shape, I don’t get why everyone thinks this is a joke. I seriously have been hoping they’d make a cheaper 3DS without the 3D but questioned if they ever would because of the name. I’m actually pretty proud of Nintendo for accepting that the one feature they were really pushing with this product isn’t exactly what everyone wants.

I use 3D almost zero percent of the time. I find it pointless and a pain in the carp for casually playing to keep it at just the right angle and distance. I’ve heard the same from a lot of my friends.

But what I/we think really doesn’t matter. Obviously this is more geared toward children and I imagine that explains the shape. Which is brilliant. The clamshell format is more likely to snap. It would also make sense given children’s eyes are more likely to be damaged by by the 3D. If I had a kid, I’d get this one over the others in a heartbeat.

Way to go Nintendo, you done a good thing.

yeah ... yeah man that's all I need to say here. Really if you're not going to get it, don't bash on it. Nobody is forcing you to get it.

yeah man totally the name could have been better but I wouldn't like it to veer towards the slew of tablet things

RE: Nintendo 2DS - Thunder Dome - Aug. 29, 2013

This system caught my attention. Now I was planning for asking for a 3DS/3DSXL for my B-Day in November (With a game), but now I can't decide after seeing this. I actually like the design some and like the fact you can do 3DS and DS games on it. I also wasn't positive I would like 3D when playing games. This will certainly be something to think about. I still wish there were some nicer colors, but I'm assuming eventually they'll be more of a variety.

Exactly, I don't fancy the 3D option either (especially on such a small screen, it doesn't make sense to me).

Now that the Wii U has also price dropped, I might end up getting that or this (because there are a ton of 3DS games that I am dying to play).

RE: Nintendo 2DS - Anchor - Aug. 29, 2013

I agree completely with Insomniac. Everybody's bashing on it, and honestly, I would have got one ove my 3DS if they were available at the time. It looks pretty comfortable and the price is definitely better, and did I forget that it's more durable as well? I never use the 3D on my 3DS, and even though I already have a 3DS, I'm considering the 2DS.

RE: Nintendo 2DS - Annoying-Fork - Aug. 29, 2013

The 2DS uses the plastic Nintendo has shown little acknowledgement over since the... Well I can't possibly open that can of worms hah.

RE: Nintendo 2DS - Eternal Blader - Aug. 29, 2013

I saw this earlier and I thought 2DS was a typo. I really don't know why the name is so bad. It can confuse people easily. The shape is really weird IMO. Maybe I think that because I'm used to the ordinary DS shape.

RE: Nintendo 2DS - Giraton - Aug. 29, 2013

ok without looking at any comments before, im giving my thoughts. 1st. no 3d, good idea for younger games as they aren't supposed to use it anyway. it would just be annoying for games like super Mario 3d land, that game is easy to mess up if you don't have the 3d on at some points. plus who even uses the 3d, I only do so for a new game to experience it once. 2nd. lower cost, people complaining about having to get a 3ds now have a cheaper option to play the new pokemon games on, great idea on Nintendo. 3rd. no flip screen, now i haven't seen the size, but no flip screen is a bad idea. my pocket will probably have trouble fitting the 3ds xl in it, let alone a ds with no flip screen. it was compact and kept it same and made it break less. take that away, and I will never buy it. 4th. button placement, I don't like it, nothing more. I like my button lower down from the top screen, reason i don't like the wii u controller. but that's probably because i played the ds for too long. first impression rating: 6/10.

Interesting...

Also, to voice what I think, it's clearly designed to put 3DS games on a console that won't make people dizzy or more likely to get seizures or confusion. That would be LOGICAL, if they price it substantially lower than the 3DS. Why pay an extra $50 for a console that has the same function of a 3DS with the 3D turned off? A lower price would make sense. If it is more expensive, it's proof that Nintendo likes to take money for any new console. It's like asking Rick on Pawn Stars for change for a twenty-dollar bill, and him replying with, "I can only do ten". It would be stupid.

RE: Nintendo 2DS - th!nk - Aug. 29, 2013

They announced the price with the system - and I think the main point of the 2DS is being cheaper, though that's a very small drop in price given the extensive cost cutting measures they've undertaken on this - I'm quite sure they'll be making significantly more profit per unit off these than the regular 3DS - when I saw the price I was pretty shocked...

As for scratches, hopefully they take a page out of phone manufacturers books and use something like gorilla glass if that's possible. Hopefully it has significantly better battery life than the 3DS.

When I get around to buying something to play the new pokemon games, I'll probably just get a 3DS (perhaps second hand) instead at that price - at least that way I wouldn't feel like I was being conned.

DefStamina88: I doubt it, given the 3DS has the option to turn it off and a lot of people complained about having to buy a new system for the new pokemon games etc - this really feels like a reaction to the latter.

That makes more sense. Pokemon has only been really good with the portable systems, and I don't know anybody that would get sick from watching the 3D effects. I mean, it's a smaller scale, not like a theater.

ok, not sick, but owning a 3ds myself, the 3d is annoying sometimes. they fixed it with the xl version by adding a lock like thing to it, but it's still annoying to have it on when you don't want it on after pulling it out of your pocket. also it's better for younger gamers as even Nintendo says not to have kids under 10 use the 3d.

RE: Nintendo 2DS - BIGBANG! - Aug. 30, 2013

Not being rood or anything but what is that it is like a slice of cake and also looks like it would get scratched very easily not very portable either but thats my opinion
