Oh but it's gonna get bad soon. The schools decided on a new dress code for when I'm in Year 13. So far the Sixth Form has been own clothes and, whilst there was a dress code, no on payed all to much attention to it. But now they're thinking about implementing a super dress code where you can't even wear jeans.After the first few weeks of looking nice they were going to be all I (and everyone else) wore.
We paid $10 or 15 (can't remember) to the student council at the beginning of the year. This put us on a 'dress down' list where once a month there was a day where we could where whatever we want. Otherwise it was pretty strict; no white socks, no tucked shirts, no long hair for guys, no pierced ears for guys, kilt length for girls, unless by faith keep facial hair to a minimum. However I grew up with my entire life doing this, so it wasn't that bad. I just hated those god damn ties
I used to have a computer teacher who was such a stickler for dress code that he would hand out detentions if we did not button up those side collar buttons that some dress shirts have.
Actually reading what I just wrote makes it sound like I went to military school or something (it wasn't that bad)XD Either way I shall stop derailing this thread with my lousy dress code.

meh, really were not that bad. Think people blow them out of proportion. Pretty much every school in Asia uses them. As does a good chunk of Europe. I think NA is the only continent in the world where there is such apprehension towards it. Except those ties, I threw mine in a dumpster after I graduated.

yes and look how well those kids are doing, no serious social issues caused by pressure from adults there
uniforms are a pathetic attempt at making students look civil and orderly. they squelch one of the few chances at true creativity most kids get in school once they're no longer in elementary art class. they offer no tangible advantage to students; they're there for the benefit of adults and there to create an illusion of people being something they're not and would never choose to be

actually, i think britain are the only ones left in europe who still use school uniforms. they stopped using them here in norway like 50+ years ago lol

I like school uniforms - it's certainly easier to get ready in the morning when you don't have to think - I just wish my schools was cuter.
I don't like the rules surrounding them though. I mean, the other day I was really upset and I'd just got in to school and I just wanted to wear my hoodie for the first period as a comfort kinda thing and because it's a hassle to take them off and my teacher was being a cow about it and I ended up shouting "I've had a really crappy morning and you're not helping - you're just being a carp about it!" I didn't even call her a carp directly. Anyways, I got an internal exclusion. =_= I know rules are rules but seriously, how would me wearing a hoodie for one hour have hurt anybody? Aaaargh.
On top of that it was a school PE hoodie - black with the school crest - not exactly me being a nonconformist in some neon hoodie or something......
Oh and it's also really bad for training the unfasionable. Many people leave school with no fasion sense because of it. XD

I had a dress code on highschool and hated it with a passion. I fought it every step of the way. No dress codes on college though! I'm happy!

Meh, I wore uniforms for most of my life and I turned out fine. However I do agree with you Brad they are designed to meld students into a particular mindset. However this was inevitable considering the group of students that attended my school. We were expected to enter the workforce with a University degree, and they were supposed to breed you for a life in the professional workforce. Uniforms played a small role in the big picture.
Thankfully my interest in any sort of arts came from my music teacher, whose influence was greater than the clothes I wore. It just so happens that 35% of our graduates pursue a career in the arts so there must be other factors at play.
My biggest problem with dress codes was the cost. They were absurdly overpriced for the shoddiness of quality. Thankfully things like Grey pants and white shirts are generic enough to be purchased at most other places at lower prices with a better fit. But that god awful scratchy wool tie was $45. BS if you ask me. (If you haven't figured it out I hated the tie).
However unless cost comes way way down, I think they are a terrible idea to implement in most schools. Parents should not have to be obliged to pay for uniforms, especially when many cannot afford it. they don't really accomplish their goals that they set out to anymore. Outdated, uncomfortable, but harmless I feel. I have derailed this thread enough, so I shall leave my point at this.
I need to go clothes shopping in the next few weeks. Stuff needs to be replaced, and need some new Spring stuff.

ehhh 2 guys at my school decided to fight the system and got suspended for an indefinite amount of time... so much for being a liberal arts school... ¬.¬
there was an election at our school and in one of the introduction speeches the term "no homo" was used. The speech was about this guys journey to find what exactly the were looking for in a cochair (one of two people who represent the upper school and lead morning meetings...). His search led him to several places and after visiting each he would take notice that each place "reeked of lust and intimacy" haha which for the most part is kinda true... u know how highschool is... anyway he got the to guy's dorm and after saying that it reeked of lust and intimacy he proceeded to utter "no homo" which is a phrase that has gotten pretty popular and is meant as a joke. everyone laughed when this was said including the leader of the gsa. anywayyy one kid complains, the administration gets on the kids back about it, and hes forced to make a formal apology to the entire school.
the next day two kids (friends of the speech giver) walk in with shirts that say "no homo" written on them as a form of protest. they felt that it was wrong for the administration to respond in a way that made the situation worse than that of which it started and they were then suspended...
and yea... monologue for the day...

There is a difference between fighting the system and shooting yourself in the foot. This was the latter.

haha yea im a bit tied in the matter... cuz i dont think that it was appropriate for him to say that infront of the ENTIRE school including faculty... but at the same time i dont feel that the administration should have reacted the way they did... but like khel said... they did mess themselves up...
just to be clear... the one guy and the kid who gave teh speech and the guys who wore the shirts are all different people... if that needs explaining...
i kinda have reasons for not liking one of the guys who had the shirt and is suspended... but i dont think he deserved that... neither of them did...
@ annie... the only way i can relate this to fashion is that their shirts were their form of rebellion...

Yeah, but knowing what actually looks good on you and what's out there is a pretty big part of expressing yourself.
Wearing exco pants, k-swiss sneakers, and a slipknot hoodie isn't exactly what I'd describe self expression.

I think I have this problem. Apart from my phases when I steal my friends fasion mags each week, my thought process when shopping is kinda like:

Yeah good point, you have to have some Expressive flare to an extent, something that looks good and can show off some sort of personality. Like for me im into Vintage clothing from Early 90's/80's era, but I'd never wear Acid Wash jeans or Motorbike leather jackets ect... something Old mixed in with some new is what I like doing.
