Guess it fell out. RE: Random Thoughts 3 - interesting posts only please - Bae Master - Dec. 28, 2009 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZAQMGbLbNw I used to watch this video like everyday 2 years ago when I was really into Taekwondo, watching it again makes me feel... really really pumped. Been thinking of taking tkd classes again for quite some time now, I miss it way too much ![]() RE: Random Thoughts 3 - interesting posts only please - Benkei - Dec. 29, 2009 I've been wondering why humans enjoy music. In films and books we empathize with a character, and when they succeed it feels like our success. None of this should apply to music though... RE: Random Thoughts 3 - interesting posts only please - Hagane Ginga - Dec. 29, 2009 lol im like that with east enders RE: Random Thoughts 3 - interesting posts only please - Kai-V - Dec. 29, 2009 (Dec. 29, 2009 2:30 PM)Benkei Wrote: I've been wondering why humans enjoy music. None of this should apply to music though...To be honest, I like Dir en grey for something very close to that. Why should it not apply to good music ? RE: Random Thoughts 3 - interesting posts only please - Benkei - Dec. 29, 2009 To answer my own question. I wanted to know the answer to this so I spoke to someone I know. They believe that music is sort of a second language. It is easy for us to pick out what is signified by certain pieces of music. This ties in closely with the empathy I made in my previous post (I.E wanting to be or feel the same as someone else). Because we pick up the signs thrown out by a piece of music and want to feel the same yourself. There is also an entirely different level. Humans like a constant rhythm or beat, because we (obviously) all have a heartbeat. So it feels good to know that there is something constant. It is also possible that this, 'second language' is very cultural and changes from country to country. I am sorry for the long winded explanation, but this is something that has been puzzling me for some time and I wanted to get it off my chest. Also please take everything I have said with a pinch of salt as it may not be 100% correct. RE: Random Thoughts 3 - interesting posts only please - Kai-V - Dec. 29, 2009 Hm, I would like to bring a nuance : I am actually very compassionate, however I do not 'feel the same' and I do not wish to. RE: Random Thoughts 3 - interesting posts only please - Benkei - Dec. 29, 2009 Perhaps this would be a better definition. "Empathy is the intellectual identification with or vicarious experiencing of the feelings, thoughts, or attitudes of another" Dictionary.com Perhaps the key word in this sentence being "Identification". This is more what I was aiming for. RE: Random Thoughts 3 - interesting posts only please - Benkei - Dec. 29, 2009 You're probably right... RE: Random Thoughts 3 - interesting posts only please - Roan - Dec. 29, 2009 (Dec. 29, 2009 6:44 PM)Benkei Wrote: Perhaps this would be a better definition. Most people like the music they do because they can relate to the message that's being expressed or to the general mood/tone of the song. That or they just generally like the sound of the music. Either way, it's really no different than film or books, because people are drawn to titles in those mediums for the same reason -- either because they relate to the characters or because they just generally enjoy the way the film was made/the book was written. Really they're just different ways of expressing the same basic human emotions. This is not related to music specifically, but if anybody is interested in the similar question of "What value is there in creating/reading literature?", definitely check out The Educated Imagination by Northrop Frye. It is a collection of short essays in which he speaks about his ideas of the role of literature in society, why people create it, why they read it, how it should be taught in schools, conventions in literature/society, and so on. It is quite eye-opening, and does not take very long to read. |
