The problem is, as usual, no one bothers to read anything.

That's why I like the whole video idea. You set up an account. When you do, you are instantly taken to some help videos.
how about mentors, and when members just join they get a new member sig so people do not start being rude to them but so that they use a more calm approach and instead of a report button their should me a 'contact mentor' button for the newbs

The problem is, the mentors would kill themselves from helping all of those people.

no not only a few mentors i mean anybody who is a good member can be a mentor so we have enough mentors and we can offer a mentor face for mentors
No, they cannot. There are simply not enough good members here to do it, and for example, I myself am far too busy with what I already do to baby a new user full-time.
There would not be enough people.

Plus, there are plenty of people who wouldn't submit to a mentor program because they think they are smart/competent enough already.

Like it.
Yea I get what th!nk is saying. The person will be like «I`m a good member. I dont need any mentoring.» When the mentoring is pretty much all the member needs, so yah, its not going to work out. Some people are just really too stubborn to say they need help.

If we have mentors who are busy, and have to take the time out of their own day JUST to teach an idiot who won't come on here ever again about how to post, then what is the point of even having that...?
Also, there is no need for mentoring. Users can learn how to make decent posts, if they just bother to read the readily available documents. Having a mentor is really just having another document.
I think it comes down to not being in elementary school and having been on a forum before.
Maybe when a user clicks the post reply button a small, summarized version of the posting rules could pop up (timer set for _ seconds). It might stop spaming/mistakes and people just posting whatever comes to mind.

This will get very annoying when our more experienced members post a lot but will have to wait or even close that window everytime.
In my opinion, you should go for the quiz idea. I can help code it if you'd like.
MEDZ!

This is a nice welcome back. I think then we are going with that, the one question.
(Jul. 18, 2011  2:38 AM)Callum6939 Wrote: [ -> ]Why a face? Also I don't think it's quite easy there will be a shed load of annoying encoding to get that to work, and 90% sounds better...

yes your right. but that might be a little too hard for little kids who are 5-10 so say 80% or 70%? and for the video that is a great idea and to check in with kia-v. my mom is great with computers shee took classes in colege for about 2 or 3 years or somthing. dont know though she is likely to say no.
(Jul. 18, 2011  4:37 AM)Raigeko13 Wrote: [ -> ]Exactly the kind of thing we need CRU.
But how can we make new users actually READ it? A timer won't help now, they'll just wait it out.

you could set the timer and have it count up/down and have a set amount of time before they get to click the check box, but not tell them, and you have to click a button or somthing to get to terms of agreement, and then the timer starts counting and if they just check the box without reading then a message will pop up and say somthing like: you must read the terms of agreement to move on. anyone agree?

Thanks ahah. Didn't think anyone noticed I was gone. Anyway, I'd be able to make it so a random question with a specific answer to it would show up each time, or multiple questions. IMO, multiple choice would be good. But we should wait to see what Kai-V says as we she has put the quiz idea down already once.

I did Joyful_2

Code it so they have to get at least 90% of the questions right, or else they have to take it again. If you have no way of making it mandatory, then maybe a face for "Knowledgeable member" wouldn't be too bad of a reward. Though, it would be hard to keep up with that many faces at once, seeing as how many people sign up.
I still think that the faces idea is dumb, they just signed up, there's no achievement there. And that's what faces are for.
I just think you all have to remember the sort of audience we have to deal with : right now, email activation is required for new users to be actually activated, and a lot of the kids do not even understand that. They reply to my automatic introductory private message, but I still see in their User Title that they are not activated, even though there had to be a message from the board telling them they had to check their emails ...

they don't have trouble they just don't feel like it, I am not saying that its an excuse but I remeber when I joined I was excited that I didn't read any thing and that is how I ened up with 30% my first day Smile

Most of the bad posts and unnecessary threads made by newbies is purely because of "excitement"...You just seem to want to do something and hence you ignore the pm...Then it's a ride downhill for the new guy...People should learn to be more patient these days...:\
And that I what I try to tell all of the new people who come because nobody likes to get in trouble.
Regarding what Kai-V said, I see no other option than the idea that we should just be more tolerant then. The WBO has dealt with this for years already, why not continue?

&Thanks spart haha.
Guys, its obvious we send hired 'agents' in to rough up our forumly-challenged members. I mean, execution is a bit much, no?
Honestly, just deal with it like we have been and most will straighten out after a while. OP+Sympathizers should either deal with it or ignore those kinds of posters at all costs. Perhaps I'm being mean, but that is probably the only way considering we've never had any other approach to them while I was active here.

I think this is a good approach. If it annoys you so much, just ignore it, or better yet - report it. There's no obligation for you to try to convert new members; if you think it's too much of a burden, then I'm sure someone else will pick up the responsibility gladly.

Acceptance that we will constantly have new members who are quite young and may never have been on a forum is the key here, really.

Quiz ideas are pretty odd - I know I certainly wouldn't sign up for a forum which required me to demonstrate a certain level of knowledge. This comes off as both elitist and unwelcoming.
