How Does Tomy Paint Their Plastic? - RoscoePColeslaw - Nov. 25, 2020

Can anybody tell me what kind of paint Tomy uses on their plastic parts, such as for the details on GT chips, or the metallic-finish on ranboo plastic gen remake layers? Ya'know, that thin, smooth, kinda' sparkly stuff. If you know what it is, but it's not feasibly obtainable, what would be the closest thing a guy can actually go out and buy?

Amendment: It dawned on me that things like the gold details all over almost every SuperKing chip/ring are probably the same stuff, and therefore are a much better example.

Basically the plastic is already colored and the other details are paintd with metalic stuffs

It is paint, fairly often the screws in one of those aforementioned remake layers will have a bit of it on them

I’m pretty sure they melt the plastic, and then place it through molds (as most toys are made).

I know the plastic is colored, but there's also definitely a thin paint on the parts I used as an example. If you happen to have the blue Spriggan GT chip, the subtle differences in shades of blue on parts of it are exactly what I'm talking about

Then again, things like the gold details that every SuperKing layer insists on having are probably the exact same stuff

RE: How Does Tomy Paint Their Plastic? - Eclipse Force - Nov. 25, 2020

They use paint and then put in on the plastic using brushes

What I want to figure out though is what kind of paint it is

Also, it looks more like they use airbrushes, at least for the full-coverage things like those "metallic" plastic gen layers in ranboos

Or maybe the print the plastic colored?

RE: How Does Tomy Paint Their Plastic? - Zeutron - Nov. 25, 2020

I always thought they dyed the plastic. It would also explain how some translucent parts get coloured.

I mean yeah, the plastic is colored, almost all of it is. What I'm saying is that some of it has a metallic paint sprayed on it, and even if nobody knows what I'm talking about there, the (non-sticker) details like gold bits and the like are probably the same stuff

I would assume thats like spray paint or just another layer of dye.

You know what, here's a visual aid that'll hopefully get the point across better than just text

Here's the Dragoon from the latest ranboo. That metallic finish it has is actually a metallic paint. It becomes evident through wear, or if you just scratch the underside or something
[Image: latest?cb=20201016120504]

An easier example, the red and gold on the Diabolos SK chip. It's clearly some kind of paint, and I want to know what it is

Yeah, I want to harness its power, but I need to know what kind of spray paint it is to do so. Typical Home Depot spray paint is all heavy and gritty, and a lot of modeling kit paint seems way too thick to be it

Then they probably dye it, but I wouldn't have a clue what paint they use.

They use an air brush for the intricate designs.
