Why can't they just make a capable system that is as powerful as their competition? While the Wiis motion control sold well, and seemed to work alright for it's time, it's now abandoned and no one really cares about them or do developers really uses them now. The Wii U also seems to reek of experimentation and I don't think either Nintendo or consumers were ready for it, although I blame lack of advertisement for the consumers, because Nintendos weakness is being overly secretive. Yeah the gimmicks can be innovative but third party developers are looking for more powerful hardware rather than just some fancy gimmicks with less power. With a more capable system, it would be able to do so much more with their games. However, seeing the NXtendo is apparently a home console AND portable system, ugh...

(Jun. 25, 2016  6:18 PM)Jinbee Wrote: Well Nintendo keeps spamming Zelda, Mario and Pokemon in our faces which can only be done so long before people want to see something new or any other intellectual properties that haven't had any games in a while. The new Kid Icarus game, Kid Icarus Uprising and Starfox's new game Starfox Zero I swear was made awkward on purpose so that people wouldn't want them, and go back to their Mario, Zelda and Pokemon. Nintendo is financially going down right now, and making a slightly better 3DS isn't good when it only has six games after two years. As for CoD, it's past it's sell by date, and it's become more of a joke to many gamers, at least from what I've seen.

Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon are perennial high-sellers. For Mario, we haven't seen a mainline title in quite sometime, but they are consistently innovative. Zelda is looking to completely overhaul its design structure. And Pokémon ... well, uh, it's popular. I don't hold Game Freak in high regard as a developer. I think they are also coming around to the value of new ideas and IP. Splatoon was a breakout hit on a system that shouldn't even have the install base to support it.

As for gimmicks, you're in luck: nothing we've heard about NX appears to be a gimmick. I think saying "it's a handheld and a console" is a bit presumptuous and perhaps missing the truth of it, which is that it's a platform. Like iOS or Android, it's a shared software ecosystem, which solves Nintendo's biggest issue as a software developer: they put out a ton of games, but since their attention is divided between Wii U and 3DS, it seems like they're not delivering enough for either console.

I'm honestly really excited to see what Nintendo can do. Both the Wii and the Wii U had some great titles, but obvious shortcomings as consoles. But if Nintendo can successfully combine their penchant for weird ideas and experimentation with a more modern focus on user experience and network connectivity, I think they could deliver something surprisingly great.

I'm buying NX day one for Zelda unless it costs a crazy amount, anyway.

RE: Random Thoughts 5 - READ RULES IN FIRST POST - Jinbee - Jun. 27, 2016

Nintendo is honestly not doing as well financially, in terms of Mario, I can't say Super Mario 3D World and Super Mario 3D Land are different, they feel rather similar with one being watered down, not sure why they bothered to add different end words on the title.

The NX being a handheld and a console could just be a rumour, but knowing Nintendo, they'll try anything new which I would say is good but it's also sacrificing the capability of being a system as powerful as their competition with the Wii and Wii U. They are also too secretive, which is bad, VERY BAD, from what I've heard, they didn't even talk about their NX in E3.

I don't want to say Nintendo is failing miserably, they do have really good quality games which need to be churned out more, and if what you said is true for the NX being able to solve that problem, then good, however, since it's not meant to replace the Wii U and 3DS as they claim, wouldn't that lose focus? Plus the DS wasn't meant to replace the Game Boy and... well...

To it's credit, the idea to move the new Zelda game to the NX is a good idea as new consoles need a system selling game.

Super Mario 3D Land sold over 10 million copies. 3D World has sold 4.82 million, which is pretty respectable considering there are only about 11 million Wii U's out there compared to roughly 60 million 3DS-family systems.

Also, they have different titles because they're different games. It's also a throwback to Super Mario Land (Game Boy) / Super Mario World (SNES).

The sales of Mario games are not really the issue; the problem is that there needs to be a more diverse library of titles to pull people into the platform in the first place. I wouldn't buy an NX for Mario, but I would probably buy Mario if something else had already convinced me to buy NX (like ... Zelda).

Keep in mind that Nintendo's situation is very different to when they launched the Wii. They've obviously been burned badly by the Wii U and learned a harsh lesson. Additionally, their previous CEO passed away and was replaced.

I think it's presumptuous to say that not showing the NX at E3 was a mistake. They focused solely on Zelda: BOTW, which turned out to be a massive success, winning Game of the Show from many outlets and having day-long lineups to play that were completely full within fifteen minutes.

Likely, they didn't show NX because they're not ready to show it. I don't think secrecy is the issue. Better to wait until it's ready, because Nintendo only has one shot at making a great first impression — something they really need to accomplish.

Nintendo doesn't have the capability to keep up with Sony and Microsoft, nor should they. While the NX will probably compare well to the PS4 and Xbox One, the upcoming PS4 Neo and Xbox Scorpio will handily outperform it. Nintendo isn't a tech company and they don't have the hardware resources that its competitors have. They are wise to focus on the value proposition of a unified platform on an affordable console.

Of course it is meant to replace the Wii U and 3DS. I think what you saw happen with the DS Vs. GBA is a great example.

My pipe-dream for NX is a Netflix-like subscription service to the entire Virtual Console library.

RE: Random Thoughts 5 - READ RULES IN FIRST POST - Jinbee - Jun. 27, 2016

Actually, they claimed the NX wasn't going to replace the Wii U which is a load of rubbish. I worded my Mario part wrong, I wasn't meant to say it was bad in sales but rather the games SM3D Land and SM3D World felt almost the same is what I was getting at.

I'm aware ...? I'm referring to how handheld vs. console games in the Mario series were titled. Land was used for portable titles and World for the console SNES release.

I actually just watched a cool analysis of Super Mario Land: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGS2xqXtLFc

Honestly, Super Mario World is still my favourite Mario games, though if Super Mario 3D World is a throw back to it then it does an alright job.

Super Mario World is really good, but I don't know if I like Super Mario 3 more.

so do you think ninendo should focus on handhelds and/or do a sega and produce software/games for xbox and playstation together?

Welp, my beast of a phone finally kicked the bucket.

Was a LG G2, had it for 4 or so years. I broke it in the lamest way possible, because my hands were kinda greasy from eating a hoagie and the phone back is inherently slippery, it slipped out of my hand and the screen shattered on the two right corners, but the entire display doesn't function except for the top left corner.

Yikes. Everyone should get a wrap for their phone if it has a slippery back haha

I think Nintendo's focus on building a user-friendly platform that runs across multiple kinds of devices that they manufacture, at an affordable price, is exactly the right approach.

I don't think Nintendo's biggest issues have been weird gimmicks nor hardware power. The fact is that Nintendo's biggest commercial successes, the Wii and DS, were totally out of left field and hard "weird gimmicks." Sure, you might think the Wii sucked (I think it's OK), it sold megatons and Nintendo wants to sell games and hardware to the widest audiences possible. The DS was a weird idea that turned out to be incredible design for a handheld console, and saw the focus on touch controls coming over three years before the iPhone launched.

The Wii U Gamepad as a huge misstep, as unlike the Wii and 3DS, Nintendo didn't focus on providing a delightful experience. The Wii and DS were fun to use and made interacting with games and software more accessible than their predecessors. But the Gamepad didn't enable anything. It was a me-too reaction to the rise of iPad gaming.

With so much of Nintendo's previously potential audience lost to mobile, and gaming enthusiasts being spoiled for choice with the PS4 and PC (not so much XB1), Nintendo has a really hard road ahead. But aside of making great games to go with it, I think here's what's important for the NX to succeed:

1. It needs to be affordable. One fact that gets lost a lot when discussing the Wii U is that it's expensive. When it launched it was a shocking $350 (for the deluxe version, admittedly, but the $299 basic version was still expensive and obviously compromised — no game! Even though Wii Sports is why Wii succeeded! This likely further hurt perception of the console).

NX needs to launch at no more than $300 USD, and it needs to be bundled with a great game. We'll see how much Nintendo has learned.

2. It needs to provide a delightful experience. This doesn't mean it needs to have some weird gimmick. It could come with a normal controller. But the software needs to be outstanding and it needs to have features that people will love.

One thing I'd like to see is a Netflix-like subscription to Virtual Console, although I think a lot of people might disagree. I think something Nintendo should find some way of using extensive historical library to provide value to their console rather than selling them piecemeal.

I am sure they have much grander plans for Nintendo Account and their mobile games, so hopefully they can leverage those experiences on the console as well. Nintendo also has some interesting patents in cloud computing, and Nintendo acquired a mystery company a few years ago for $100 million.

You could assume that Nintendo are just bumbling fools and that nothing good could come of their next effort, but I wouldn't count them it. They've done a ton of brilliant things before, and the last few years have been a bitter lesson. I'm convinced they've learned something from it.

RE: Random Thoughts 5 - READ RULES IN FIRST POST - Jinbee - Jun. 29, 2016

@[KingofDarkness0] Seeing as they dominate the handheld market, or at least what I've heard a while ago, they should focus on hand held. I hear the latest smartphones are more powerful than the 3DS, which could be why, although many mobile games don't seem that interesting, and we certainly didn't need those Flappy Bird clones.

@[Bey Brad] The Wii is a good console but the gimmick didn't seem to have lasting appeal, the motion controls were why the Wii sold so well, as it was sold on a gimmick, but it seemed that it wore off quickly, though I guess people for some reason tolerated it more than when Sony or Microsoft did the same thing... but whatever. Nintendo seems to focus mainly on the Japanese market because they make more games from franchises Japanese fans like but ignore some other IPs the other consumer likes, like F-Zero and Star Fox for example, and yeah I know there's new games for them but they were uncomfortable and it's not "innovation" as they claim.

I won't say Nintendo was fail quickly at the moment, they could still learn from their lessons and make the NX a success, seeing as they've lasted eight generations of consoles, and hopefully come back for the ninth.

RE: Random Thoughts 5 - READ RULES IN FIRST POST - Bey Brad - Jun. 29, 2016

For what it's worth, Zelda is not popular at all in Japan. That's totally a Western-market focused title, which is why you see it adopting features similar to Western RPG games in the latest title (albeit with a uniquely Zelda execution). I think Nintendo doesn't have faith that F-Zero can sell, and I don't know that they're wrong.

RE: Random Thoughts 5 - READ RULES IN FIRST POST - Jinbee - Jun. 29, 2016

I honestly had no idea, but I definitely know Mario and Pokemon have to be. Again, leaving the new Zelda game to be released for the NX is a good idea, if they want NX to sell well in the Western market.

Japan, in general, is in a much worse state in terms of the video game market in the Western world. At the investor Q&A just now, Miyamoto said that a real console title needs to sell at least 2 million copies worldwide to make money — and that in Japan, selling 400,000 copies would be considered "a hit."

I'm still tight they haven't made a pokemon rpg game similar to red and blue and other variations for actual consoles. As for the gimmick problem..couldn't have said it better myself to be honest.

That's sad. I hope his soul rests in peace. He had really literally went to hell and back.

Nazi Germany ,to be fair, did cause some of history's worst atrocities (Hitler killed somewhere between 6 million Jews and his war lost him 6 million soldiers too, so that's 12 million. Stalin, the one man more ruthless than him, caused at least 2.5-5 times as much IIRC) but I can't help but gawk at their millitary hardware.
I mean, they got a lot of sick stuff (even if some weren't very practical). I'll stay here though, since this is a sensitive issue.
