RE: General Health Thread - Cannon - Apr. 03, 2012

I have asthma, and whenever I drink red cordial, it always induces asthma. I always cough really hard after..
Is this normal?

RE: General Health Thread - Janstarblast - Apr. 03, 2012

Eh, sorry but I am slightly more inclined to believe Hazel here, and not you, Arupaeo. Smile
I do not have any ulcer for sure.
Thanks guys!

Have you tried drinking some that was not cold ?

RE: General Health Thread - Cannon - Apr. 03, 2012

Tried it when it's not cold, helps! But just a little tough to breathe .. ish. It doesn't seem to happen when I drink orange ones, I think. (Not quite sure since the last time I drank it was like a month or two ago..)

I always put ice in the cordial though .. Since it tastes better. aha

RE: General Health Thread - Kai-V - Apr. 03, 2012

Really cold drinks mixed with a lot of acid (I searched for the recipe on Google ...) does not help asthma. Actually, I am not certain that it is necessarily asthma, but if you usually have problems breathing, it would really not help. How do you react to slushes ?

RE: General Health Thread - Cannon - Apr. 03, 2012

Well, when i drink the cordial, I cough, and ierno, you hear a little squeak sound come out. Not sure what it is, but parents says it's asthma.

I cough quite a bit with slushies. Well, the school's one ...

RE: General Health Thread - Hazel - Apr. 03, 2012

I'm going to ask a couple of very obvious questions, because I've seen parents come into clinics about this type of thing. I'm also going to outright state that I don't think Asthma is the primary offender, here, as coughing from cold/viscous drinks is common even in people without it. It's not helping anything, but it's not the fellow on the grassy gnoll, either.

1: Do you actually mix the syrup with water, or are you being a big silly and drinking concentrated syrup straight? If so, or if you're not using enough liquid, it is too viscous, and it's coating the back of your throat(like milk/thick dairy products) and inducing coughing via irritation.

2: To supplement the first question, do you have similar problems when drinking whole-fat Dairy Milk?

3: Have you tried watering it down a bit further than usual? Some cordials really need to be watered down to almost nothing, with a few requiring an 8:1 ratio of syrup:water.

RE: General Health Thread - Cannon - Apr. 03, 2012

1. Yuck, taste disgusting without water ...
Here is a basic Diagram or whatever
[Image: djfxnoe2.jpg]

EDIT: Actually, a little less cordial.

2. No

3. What do you mean by watering it down a bit further than usual?

RE: General Health Thread - Hazel - Apr. 03, 2012

I mean adding more water than usual.

The only other conclusion I can come to is that something in the flavoring agents - usually alcohol-based sugars in the case of fruit juices, though often natural - is irritating your throat/larynx/epiglottis while you drink, causing wheezing/coughing.

Find me an online product link to the specific cordial you're drinking, that lists the ingredients, and I'll see if I can pinpoint the offender - it may only be present in one or two flavors.

RE: General Health Thread - Cannon - Apr. 03, 2012

I can't find any link. Can I post a picture showing all the ingredients?

RE: General Health Thread - Hazel - Apr. 03, 2012

That would be fine, too.

RE: General Health Thread - Cannon - Apr. 03, 2012

Well, this is the front/brand.

And to the main point.

RE: General Health Thread - Hazel - Apr. 03, 2012

Hmm... well, apple juice can make some individuals cough, but Sucralose is not an alcohol-compounded sugar replacement byproduct, so it shouldn't be the offender... the only thing I can recommend, then, is seeing if watering it down further, incrementally, helps, because it really could. Some people just cannot drink viscous drinks, and fruit juices are prone to coating the throat and irritating it, by way of coating the passage down to/slightly below the Larynx.

EDIT: Wait a minute, I just thought of something - Sodium Metabisulphite is a Sulfur compound, and Sulfur agitates asthmatics into coughing in almost 90% of cases.

So, asthma was the culprit, after all. I apologize for taking so long to identify the problem - you cannot drink drinks that contain sulfur-based preservatives, if you have Asthma, Cannon.

RE: General Health Thread - Cannon - Apr. 03, 2012

I'll try watering it down more, to see if it helps, and I'll post if anything has changed or not.

Thanks Kai, and Hazel. Smile

RE: General Health Thread - Hazel - Apr. 03, 2012

Cannon, I just edited my previous post, and I think you should look at it; I have located the problem, I believe.

And, in fact, after doing a bit of extra research, the Food and Drug Administration advises that those sensitive to Sulfites avoid products containing Sodium Metabisulphite, as it will set off allergic/asthmatic reactions.

RE: General Health Thread - Cannon - Apr. 03, 2012

Wow, are you serious? I can't drink it?

But yeah, probably substitute cordial with water, as it is the healthiest option. Also, are there any cordials which don't contain that specific compound?

RE: General Health Thread - Hazel - Apr. 03, 2012

None whatsoever. Evidently it is the secondary preservative in most multiple-fruit juices and mixes, including Wine of almost every single variety.

Sulfites are known for setting off asthma attacks - and under the wrong conditions, it could turn into a severe one.

RE: General Health Thread - Cannon - Apr. 03, 2012

First time I've heard that before ... aha

What about Slushies and Slurpees? I don't cough when it comes to slurpees.

RE: General Health Thread - Hazel - Apr. 03, 2012

Since those are usually mixes where the ingredients aren't disclosed, I cannot tell you. Some may have it, some may not - if you find one that makes you cough reliably, avoid it.

RE: General Health Thread - Cannon - Apr. 03, 2012

Err, OK. Thanks for your help! Smile

RE: General Health Thread - Hazel - Apr. 03, 2012

No problem, and I am sorry it took so much for me to notice something I should've noticed right away...

RE: General Health Thread - Cannon - Apr. 03, 2012

Serious? You were the one helping me out! No need to be apologetic. Aha.

RE: General Health Thread - Hazel - Apr. 03, 2012

It is an issue of pride, haha. Were I around actual peers of the industry, I would not ever live down overlooking sulfites as a cause of coughing in an asthmatic.

RE: General Health Thread - Cannon - Apr. 03, 2012

I see, fair enough! Smile

RE: General Health Thread - TakasuMouce - Apr. 05, 2012

Does anyone know why my hand falls alsleep when I go to sleep. I don't do anything to stop the blood flow, and all of a sudden, my hand falls alsleep. Also, its weird that I have the Mediterranean Disease ( thalassemia ) , yet it doesn't affect me. Actually, it can cause me to be immune to some diseases transmitted mosquitoes!
