I think that when Jonathan gave Dio’s head a hug Dio realized that Jonathan cared about him just like his mother used to and so he realized that he really only wanted someone to care for him and to give him the attention he needed, but he kept on pushing those people away because his ambition blinded him.

we have seen dio use what is assumed Johnathan's stand and it is similar to hermit purple but used slightly differently so maybe a hermit purple to fit his personality
