I think Hikaru underestimated his opponent. In drum's case he might have thought that the power level of dragon is similar to when drum fought Hyuga and in Lui's case he never considered that Lui can also make a Strategy.

The reason they're plan failed was because the gap in power between Hikaru and the bladers he was facing was too large to bridge. Not saying that strategy isn't important but when you're facing an opponent who's leaps and bounds above you in strength simply a good strategy won't be enough to bridge that divide as we saw from that battle.
