High Voltage Talks SEGA Partnership
The developer of The Conduit chats about the game's new high-profile publisher.

October 31, 2008 - Earlier this week, we learned all about the official publisher of The Conduit, High Voltage Software's system-pushing first-person shooter. The Wii-exclusive title will be backed by none other than SEGA, a high-profile publisher with the resources to do the game justice. On Wednesday, we caught up with SEGA of America's president, Simon Jeffery, to talk about the partnership. Today, we get the word from High Voltage Software's founder, Kerry Ganofsky and chief creative office Eric Nofsinger.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

IGN: First of all, congratulations on partnering with SEGA. What made you go with the company?

Kerry Ganofsky: SEGA is clearly committed to supporting original core gamer content for the Wii. They just "get it," you know?

IGN: We saw in the press release that MotionPlus and WiiSpeak are confirmed. How're you using both?

Eric Nofsinger: WiiSpeak is a natural fit for a FPS, but MotionPlus is a bit trickier. We will support it, but not as a "tack on" or a waggle-the-Wiimote mechanic. This comes into play in refining our overall shooter experience without requiring it. For example: tracking the movements of the Wiimote even when not pointed at the sensor bar and thus avoiding "locking" the cursor occasionally when going out of sensor range and similarly tracking the Wiimote orientation when not pointed at the sensor bar to prevent the bolo weapon cursors from "freezing" when losing one or both of the reflectors. These sorts of integrations will make the experience slightly tighter but without explicitly punishing the players without the peripheral.
IGN: Do you view The Conduit as the first entry in a continuing franchise? Is SEGA on board for that?
Kerry: This was key to our decision making process. We really are very likeminded in our goals for the franchise.

IGN: The Conduit obviously has a big online component. Does partnering with SEGA help with this facet in any way?

Kerry: Their team is fantastic! They have an amazing quality assurance group that is exceptionally responsive. Their support is going to make the experience a lot more solid for players.

IGN: How is the game progressing since we last spoke?

Eric: It's not been that long [laughs]. We continue to focus on multiplayer, tighten up single-player, and incorporate fan and press feedback.

Kerry: We're in a really good spot. The game looks, and more importantly, plays amazing.

IGN: Thanks guys. Any final words for fans looking forward to the title?
Eric: The feedback we have received is unbelievable and incredibly supportive. It genuinely fuels us to deliver even more.

Kerry: Get your preorders going! [Laughs

I love how they speak with such an air of confidence and like they've revolutionized the genre when they have yet to even prove themselves with The Conduit.

This is no Peter Molyneux, because unlike these guys, he isn't an arrogant prick.

RE: THE CONDUIT(xbox graphics on wii) - Kei - Nov. 03, 2008

Well, we do have the Tales of Symphonia sequel coming out this month, which is sure to be amazing.

I am happy with how the company feels about the Wii in general though. Other developers need to start stepping up like High Voltage is doing.

RE: THE CONDUIT(xbox graphics on wii) - Kei - Jan. 22, 2009

I actually think the graphics are nice looking for a Wii game. Not sure what other people are expecting. Serious

RE: THE CONDUIT(xbox graphics on wii) - Roan - Jan. 22, 2009

The graphics are acceptable, they aren't anything mind-blowing but they're good enough, its just that everything else about the game is complete carp.

The art direction is ugly, the game looks like Goldeneye in space with Metroid Prime's enemies. It just looks really, REALLY average to me and I'm willing to bet that if this weren't on Wii it wouldn't be getting anywhere near the amount of attention it is now. Like every other "mature" Wii game (No More Heroes, MadWorld, etc.), I think core gamers are just clinging to this title in the hopes it will somehow prove that the Wii can be anything besides a minigame player.

While the game may turn out to be decent (I won't even say it will be good -- I really have that little confidence in it), it won't change the fact that games like this tank on the Wii at retail and no matter how good the game may end up being it won't change the landscape of gaming on the Wii. Really wish people would let that idea go, because its not happening.

Trying to put out core games on Wii is like trying to sell gore porn to an 80 year old.

RE: THE CONDUIT(xbox graphics on wii) - MuchWow - Jan. 22, 2009

no more heroes was really good and it was one of the nominies of the best game of the year.
so i think it worked with no more heroes and it will with this one(i hope)
maybe no more heroes didnt get enough sells but am sure after people now know how good it is every wii owner will get no more heroes 2,i got an xbox360 and played some awesome games but i still think NMH was a great game with a great storyline, u gotto try it roan, and if u did u gotto finish it all to get wut am talking about!

if no more heroes was for any system but the wii nobody would've cared about it at all

RE: THE CONDUIT(xbox graphics on wii) - MuchWow - Jan. 22, 2009

ya cuz this game is awesome with the wii controllers and would suck in other systems!

So, you are essentially saying that "core" games can't be made for the Wii? :\ Of course "core" gamers will cling to these types of titles on the Wii. Why would they not? When somebody is clearly putting an effort out to change the perception of the gaming population as a whole, they deserve to be payed attention to.

This is probably true, sadly. Because of all of the ports and shovelware that has been pushed onto the Wii, it has, by most "core" gamers been perceived as a party system only capable of party or dumbed down games. Which is sad, because that is most certainly not true. To say otherwise is ignorant. Because of how far we are into the console cycles, I think this perception will be difficult to break however.

Maybe it is the graphical deficiencies of the Wii, or its controller that has driven away major developers from seriously considering it the first place, I really don't understand.

I'm not saying that at all. Core games can and are being made for the system, they just aren't performing well at all at retail. The demographic of Wii owners is a very different market than that of the 360 and PS3's audience. The overwhelming majority of Wii owners are not interested in more traditional "games" like Zelda and The Conduit, etc. This is no fault of the actual games themselves, its just that those who own a Wii bought one for a very different reason than those people who bought a PS3 or a 360.

My point is, the Wii's library and audience is firmly rooted in the more casual part of the business -- its the reason the system is so successful in the first place. So trying to shoehorn games that are targeting the amazingly small niche of core gamers who own a Wii seems ludicrous to me. As I said, no matter how good your game may be, its not going to change the fact that you have the massive install base and casual mindset working against you.

There's no probably about it -- its a fact. As I mentioned above the audience of Wii owners is a very different audience compared to the other two consoles. The demand for "core" games on the Wii is not nearly as strong as it is on the other platforms because the core gamers aren't gaming on the Wii.

Its not a perception at all, Kei. Core games on Wii are much more an exception than the rule -- they are vastly outnumbered by shovelware, ports and minigame collections -- not that those are necessarily bad, because I'm sure there are people who enjoy them, but it doesn't change the fact that core gamers will never feel satisfied with the Wii because the types of games they want to play are in a shockingly large drought. The Wii is definitely capable of delivering those types of games, its just those games do not sell well, therefore there is no motivation for Nintendo especially, but third parties as well, to develop those kinds of games for the system.

Kei Wrote:Maybe it is the graphical deficiencies of the Wii, or its controller that has driven away major developers from seriously considering it the first place, I really don't understand.

No. If you recall when the Wii was first announced, developers were very anxious to see what they could do with the controller and the graphical limitations were not really an issue to most of them -- the promise of the controller over rid the hardware's limitations. Unfortunately, most of what these developers had in mind was tailored for more traditional games and as the Wii has aged we've seen those traditional type games pushed aside in favor of quick, pick up and play style games. As I said, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, its just the way things have turned out for the system as a result of its targeted demographic.

Yeah I agree, its looking cool.
still that videos old news to me, caught it on IGN a few weeks ago. I am totally impressed how far its come. Graphic effects look pretty cool for what i thought the wii was capabale of.

roan alot of what you said is true, but that still should not detract from what Conduit is, right. Its an ambitious IP from a small dev, and imho its sweet that they are attemping make a game like this rather than some iteration of waggle. not saying i expect it to lead a rebirth of the system for core gamers*, but its totally good for the system. it deserves the the attention it gets. many big publishers coulda done the same by now,but didnt. so its fair for them to have the spotlight. it is because its for the wii.

i think its not worth saying you thinks its bad so early man. be optimistic Smile

also as for the artistic direction, this is a small dev with a new IP. they dont nessarily have the man power or the talent to have it nailed out the gate.
IRRC Halo was cohesive looking, but not down pat like bungie have it now.

RE: THE CONDUIT(xbox graphics on wii) - Roan - Jan. 23, 2009

^ I would agree with you in saying the game deserves the attention its getting if the game were getting attention for anything OTHER than its graphics -- which really aren't that impressive, even as far as Wii games go.

This game rocketed to gamer fame when its loud mouth devs started talking carp about it having graphics comparable to that of a 360 game -- that's just not true, even in the most recent videos and screenshots.
