Don't worry, most Americans can't either.
They just pretend.
I know this from various first hand experiences. I was in marching band for 4 years and I kid you not, at every football game I marched in hardly anyone knew what was going on, they were just there to yell and scream and act stupid, particularly when our team scored.
But during the actual game, pretty much no one pays attention, they're all busy socializing and talking about everything BUT football.

Also Ryan, I don't think high school students should be the example for lack of football awareness. Everyone I knew just went as a means to socialize.
