If it ends up looking anything like the link that Crimson posted, I am really not interested.

That thing looks uncomfortable as hell to hold and while I appreciate the massive screen size, I'm really not down with how thick/generally bulky it is.

Plus the exterior aesthetic itself is just awful. Nintendo has better design sense than this. I still think the DS Lite (white version) is one of the nicest looking things they've put out.

You should probably not post something as news only to backpedal it as a rumor afterwards.

Err...but news do we have of it? If we didn't have rumours this topic would be boring. So im going to continue posting rumours(clearly stating that they are rumours Grin) untill we get solid facts from Nintendo.
... so it can be a DS? Wonderful.

Take notes Nintendo, I have high standards now.

What is this. I do not EEEEVEN..../rhetorical

Thing is a she-beast.
You know, normally I would be inclined to grab the pitchforks and rip Nintendo a new one for releasing a really stupid sounding new product and getting all excited to watch it fail miserably, but I've been proved wrong twice now with the original DS and the Wii, so I'm gonna give them the benefit of the doubt here with the 3DS.

I still think the entire premise is stupid and sort of pointless, but I'm curious to see how/if they manage to pull it off.

Why is being opportunistic stupid? At least this sounds more likely to execute properly than the Virtual Boy ever could have.
that sounds sorta....weird.they just made the dsi and dsi xl.why do they keep making new things?IT'S CRRRAAAAZZZZYYYY!!!!

I take this back as i have looked further into the matter and now really want one.

It sounds stupid because I don't much see the purpose of a handheld gaming platform in 3D.

For home consoles/PC games it makes a lot of sense, because these are generally things where you are sitting down and focused/immersed in the experience. For handhelds though, whose systems and games are designed to be used on-the-go, I'm not so sure 3D is a good fit.

Which is why I said I'm curious to see how and if Nintendo can pull it off.
Well if the three dimensional stuff doesn't work out they can say the 3DS stands for the thing not having horrid 3D graphics.

Kind of like how the Developer's System got retconned into the Dual Screen.

No blade, Nintendo have ruled out Head tracking.
I wonder if there would be a PSP 3D they don't seem to be doing anything new, so they might take this concept.
The idea of 3D is hardly new, and for Sony itself in regards to video games. If they unveil a PSP successor at E3 or TGS, and it has 3D vision technology I doubt it's because they saw Nintendo do it.
I now its hardly new i'll use another word 'different'.
PSP is doomed anyway. Unless Sony lower the price of their current SKU's and upcoming systems, If not then its only Nintendo Vs. Apple (I KNOW ITS HORRIFIC THAT APPLE IS IN THIS WAR), I don't see Nintendo putting a high price for the 3DS.
People automatically think 3D is expensive. Well its not! Not Parallex barrier(PB) which 100% will be the screen Nintendo will use. A normal 3D Non-touch (PB) screen costs about 20$-30$. And what we have seen from the FCC board filings, Nintendo will only use 1 3D screen. Which will minimize the costs completely enabling Nintendo to add more innovative things to to the Nintendo 3DS. Satoru Iwata has stated in an interview "the next DS will have highly detailed graphics" and will have "motion sensing". So Accelerometers. So i'm currently thinking along with a lot other fans, that the 3DS launch price will be 180$-200$. I highly doubt it will reach the 200$ All will be told to us at E3 Grin

P.S I'm glad this thread has sprouted some activity thanks to me Wink xD
I've said this a few times already, but when Nintendo is pegged as a front runner, history shows they've done bad. If Sony has a successor to the PSP to announce, given the kind of third party push Sony has (so much so to reignite interest in a handheld that's ship already sailed, and a push that stole third parties from Nintendo in the 90's), and their ability to create a network, there is no good reason to count them out. The GameCube doing what it did didn't hurt the Wii, the same should go for the next PSP. Many see this wave of AAA PSP titles (MGS, KH, God of War, Resident Evil, etc.) as Sony's way to allow the platform to die with the public's good faith.

Apple on the otherhand isn't a real compeitition. They've created a market where games like Metal Gear Solid 5, Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, and such wouldn't be able to be made simply because that market wants $1-$10 games, and those types of games won't make their budget back with that price. It's a problem that Apple has yet to see any reason to fix, which is to be expected, as they've never released a game themselves, and thus haven't seen the problems they have done. Not to mention the fact that with Apple, it's incredibly easy to get a dev kit, it's just that once you have it, don't expect any sort of support at all from Apple. Which is why we've seen so many independant studios who started out making iPhone/iPod Touch games jump ship to DSiWare, WiiWare, PlayStation Network (normal releases and Minis), Xbox Live Arcade (normal releases and Indie Games), and even Steam. The Apple platforms are very much cellphone games, cheap and forgettable, no one buys a cellphone to play games on them, and no one buys Apple's devices to do the same either. You'd have a hard time saying that in regards to Nintendo and the PlayStation line.

Notice how I didn't even have to rule out the fact the Apple platforms are insane with their idea of no buttons to discredit their place in the market, hahaha.

The hurdle for Sony is putting on a good example for everyone else to see. Sony in North America and in Europe gave up on the PSP once in the lead up to the PS3 launch, incidentally, that's also when the DS took off and erased the lead the PSP had created in unit sales (if you don't believe me, early on in the DS's life, Nintendo had the NPD group combine the GBA and DS sales together because the DS was performing so poorly). They've admited they ignored the platform because the PS3 was costing the company billions, so hopefully they have the ability to keep things together this time around, because a handheld market with only 1 real player, isn't really a market and it doesn't strive anyone to innovation.

I completely agree with you. But Nintendo will come out at the top unless, Sony bring out the PSP2 with a good price. And even with the original PSP which had better everything than the DS. Still didn't come out at top. Nintendo has to create a Network though.

I said it in the E3 thread, but I have an issue with the clamshell design and my hands so this using that design is something I already have a problem with. The two screens taking up different real estate on each shell looks really cheap and ugly. Also, the positioning of the one (!) analog nub is so weird and off putting. That last part also is something that'll cramp up my hands.

While it is a mockup, I doubt much will change before launch.
when doe it come out
