(Jan. 16, 2017  3:41 PM)Kai-V Wrote: [ -> ]This is totally true. One day they showed the behind-the-scenes and we discovered that voice actors had to work with rolling banners of paper, telling them how long they were supposed to scream for, and I do not even think that they had the show playing on a television as well to get an idea of the character's energy while saying that. The voice actors were, no offense, not that good either, but for sure they were directed horribly as well.

They had the show running on a television below the rythmo band (the rolling banners of paper actually a clear band of 35mm which is projected) as shown on the behind the scenes (the participating VAs were clearly not actually recording scenes but rather staging it to show fans how it worked) here is a picture from Aiyanne Mizuhara's http://beybladejapanese-vs-dub.blogspot.co.uk showing this
[Image: Untitled-3.jpg]

I also watched the behind the scenes as well as corresponding episodes just to check as I was sure there was indeed a television with the show running at the same time, however as stated before as it was staged as it wasn't the correct scene timing being shown (close with Alex's and Marlowe's however). Also the lines the VAs said in the behind the scenes weren't the final takes in their corresponding episodes (the final takes of said lines sounded better).

So why were the dub va's not giving it their all? I believe the only above average performances were David Reale, Daniel DeSanto, and maybe Mary Long.

Want me to go and ask them for you?  Cute

Anyway I believe all the VAs had good performances and naffy performances they were good. I think in terms of vocal energy and tone Marlowe Gardiner-Heslin, Alex Hood and Mary Long came close to the Japanese VAs of their characters.

Wait you just said David Reale was an above average performance? Oh boy...Gasp

Well, Alex Hood's voice does suit Kenny quite well but his acting is pretty bad honestly. I understand he is a kid but sometimes his acting felt stiff and I've seen other child actors who did better but that's just me.

My gawd, someone said David Reale's acting was above average. Ooooh, wait till Kai-V sees this Joyful_3

They all felt stiff sometimes but the acting wasn't bad on the whole, I am curious to know though what child actor did you think did better in a low budget dubbing setting? Now the Miyazaki Disney dubs don't count.

Yeah I thought the main characters voices (not talking about acting here) really suited them, up until the Bakuten Shoot Beyblade dub I was accustomed to dubs that had 11-13 year old boys sounding like fully grown men though the acting was really good (Digimon dubs) and/or hearing the same voices from another show over again for main characters (Ocean/Saban/4Kids dubs) which is why I found the BSB dub refreshing and unique.

If we're not just talking about the Bakuten cast, Cameron Kennedy does a pretty good job at voicing Takashi from Metal Fight Beyblade (yeah, he was a teenager at the time but he still counts as a child actor). If you wanna stick to the Bakuten cast they I'd say Gage Knox. Whilst Gage Knox wasn't amazing, I still found him slightly more preferable to Alex Hood when it comes to the acting in the first series.

That's not to say Alex Hood didn't get better as time went on, he did but I just found the ones mentioned above to be better but again, it's just my personal opinion (although I'm sure people are gonna come up to me and tell me my opinions are wrong).

I think the voices work fine for the main characters of BSB (Yes, even David Reale... blasphemy I know) and whilst their acting wasn't too spectacular, the voices do still fit them. And I know someone will probably ask:

"Have you even seen the original Bakuten Shoot Beyblade?!" Yes... I have and yeah, the voices are fine too but I think Gage Knox suits Max a tad bit more.

And yeah, I agree that the BSB dub (as corny and ridiculous as it is) was rather unique.

Sorry for that extremely lengthy post, I got carried away like always Joyful_3'
The voice of David Reale is really never what I questioned, it was always just the poor acting hah.

I did mean other animes too Grin  Hmmmm only watched bits of Metal Fusion but I do agree about Cameron Kennedy (think he would at the time of dubbing would have been the same age as Gage Knox dubbing Fierce Battle) however the way the dubbed it I believe was more restrictive so that is fabulous! Ironically I find that both actors you have mentioned have similar voice qualities/energies and I pretty much agree with what you said about Gage Knox there, his portrayal of Max was different from Ai Orikasa's he made Max his own but he did keep with what Max is and added maturity to the role I felt anyway and having his voice change during production couldn't have been easy. I have watched some of the original too and I felt Gage Knox suited Max more voice-wise. The acting in the original is intense and on point however I think the guys sounded too feminine voice-wise.

You are entitled to your own opinion as I am to mine, you shouldn't worry about opposing opinions.

S-sorry... it's just a thought. But I still think the Japanese performances are supreme. Not to mention that Reale's acting was still not that satisfactory anyway. (forgive me, Kai-V! It just slipped out!)

For Max's voice, I'd say Orikasa adds a lot more flavor to his character. I mean, random English? How could you resist that?

I was only kidding bura, I thought David Reale was alright Grin and don't be sorry for having your own opinion, Rancher and I were just being tongue-in-cheek as we have both been on this board for years.

I don't honestly know how the dub could have translated Max's random English bursts, a lot more flavour? could you elaborate as now I am thinking this is a tasting competition Cute (MaxieChef coming soon on WBO!)

Maybe Max could've had random Spanish bursts instead for Nelvana's dub.

If by flavour you meant random foreign word bursts then that's something not really to do with the actor as usually they don't get a say in scripts especially in anime, like say in MaxieChef our contestants have to cook the same dish with ingredients provided by who they work for however only one of the contestants was given seasoning that the opposing team couldn't possibly get their hands on.

It's fine dude, it's your opinion. I mean I personally thought David Reale's voice wasn't too bad for Kai and I personally don't think his performance was that bad (although not great).

Haha, I forgot about Max's random English. I mean I find Gage Knox's voice more fitting but I do admire the effort they put to make Max stand out in the Japenese version.

I said similar to bura adding that we were being tongue-in-cheek.

I believe he spoke English in the manga too which was carried over into the English localization, in GRev the Japanese titles of Max's focus episodes were English words as a reference to his random English speech as a way of saying "This is a Max episode".

Although I too think Gage Knox's voice suited Max better I absolutely adore Ai Orikasa's portrayal of Max.
Anybody interested in pitching in for these photocopies of original anime artwork? I promise to scan them as soon as I have them hah.

These design boards are litterally the only place we can learn some of the characters' last names, by the way. That is how I learned of Mihaeru's, Aaron's, Mathilda's, etc. However, having already paid for one of these sets before for the same price, this is beginning to be very expensive for what remains just sheets of paper hah. Help would be really appreciated. Obviously the G Revolution set interests me more, but the two 2002 ones make me curious too, and the lineart is always nice.
Akira seems like a weird mix of Ming Ming and Yu Tendo to me.

In terms of personality I guess, in appearance, I see a mix of Mathilda and Takanosuke.
Is there a tetsuya like character in burst? I wanna say it's that puppet guy but not sure....also what is his deal anyway?

I don't think Kensuke acts like anything close to Tetsuya.

He's a sweet kid, but extremely shy.  He grew up constantly moving around the country with his family, and therefore missed out on a lot of the people-skills that we develop by making and keeping friends.  He uses the puppets to show the brusk and gentle sides of his personality without directly opening up to anyone.   He only speaks in his real voice around those he's established trust with.

A bit eccentric, but far more competent than Tetsuya.

BTW anyone noticed that burst stadium has 4 exits/pocket in anime compared to real Standard Burst Stadium has only 3?

I don't think there's any exits in the Burst stadium in the anime since it doesn't have a cover

It may not have cover but if you look closely there are 4 walls and gap in them (see when shu is training in opening. They show stadium from above. That time you can see there are 4 gabs from where beys can get out)

But I think those 4 gaps are for decoration because every over finish in the anime has the bey being thrown out the top of the stadium.
