there seems to be a lot of variation between the different atomic drivers. I’m looking to get one, but not sure which ones are good.

Currently stuck on either wolborg from air knight booster  or dead Phoenix
Wolborg's atomic is definitely better. It free-spins much more and has better LAD. Dead Phoenix's atomic has a lot of ridges and gets stuck a lot.
I have Dead Phoenix's Atomic, it's my best Atomic because the ball is slightly smaller than previous Atomics
Atomics got better as time passed, the best options should be dP .0.At > Wl .0E.At > hK .7.At > sX .5B.At (rbv10)
I got impressively lucky with my Arc Bahamut's Atomic. The ball is 360 spinning, so it has the greatest LAD ever.

Atomic's ball is supposed to be like that.

Would a smaller ball mean better same spin stamina, opposite spin precession/LAD or both?
I would recommend pheonix's atomic. My wolborg atomic gets stuck sometimes, while both my dead pheonix's atomics wont get stuck at all. The worst one i have is the hazard kerbeus one.
I play with a fair amount of different Atomics. I find the one that comes from the dead phoenix set has the most burst resistance, as I have owned three total from this set and every one of them has felt as if they had tight springs. Oddly, these Atomic pieces also seem to work extremely well in opposite spin. They never let me down when I use them for spin stealing beys. The Atomic that comes with Walborg feels good as well. I use it on Archer Hercules currently and it works well fighting opposite spin match-ups. The Atomic that comes with the new Stardust Pegasis feels the most free spinning, yet it without a doubt had the least amount of burst resistance. I haven't played with that one a lot especially compared to the others, but on Judgment it seems to do quite well. Maybe it's just smoother because it seems as if it self KO's less than the others. It would be the Atomic I throw on an attack layer.
I have 3 At: dP, aB, & sX. From what I can tell, dP seems to be the best followed by aB then sX. I will say my dP At get the most use so the wear may have something to do with it.
I find them all pretty similar and similarly different. TT are using the same molds to produce every single Atomic driver and simply changing the colour of the plastics used in the molds for each different release. The similarities and differences between each atomic driver is based more on which mold a particular driver has come from more so than the bey release itself. Some molds may see more or less production with a particular release compared with another but the fact remains they all come from the same molds.
