(This post contains spoilers also I have noticed a lot of spelling errors, this is because I use a touchscreen keyboard, my apologies!)
When in an argument that concerns Kai, people argue he has no development or character. While that may be true in the dubs as Kai was represented as every cliché rival being a douche bag and making cheesy lame jokes over everything, he was represented differently in the Japanese and the Manga, here I will be talking about and analysing his development.
Backstory(Manga)
When Kai was a child his father loved beyblades and wanted to bring joy to kids. Kai was also very close and played beyblades with his father but his grandfather found out about this and gave Kai's dad a choice, the company or beyblades, Kai's dad chose beyblading and Kai wanted to go after him but was stopped by his grandfather.
Childhood
During his childhood Kai was manipulated and was hinted to be abused by his grandfather and Volkov/Boris. This scarred Kai making him scared when he returned.
Shell killers/bey sharks
At the beginning of Bakuten shoot, Kai was a gang leader, who stole blades hoping to search for the 4 holy beasts (in the manga he wanted them to destroy every beyblade). After losing to takao, he was recommended to join the BBA team and battle strong opponents, he wasn't interested until he found out they also had holy beast which his grandfather needs.
World tournament
During the world tournament Kai was anti-social it was revealed that he was afraid he would get close to them, this shows that he did think about his teammates despite what everyone else thought
Black Dranzer
This is the big turning point of Kai's character, during Russia, Kai betrayed everyone, ditched Dranzer and became evil again. This upset takao a lot because he thought Kai was his friend. It was the battle of lake Baykal where takao used Dranzer to battle black dranzer, Kai was shocked to see it again and how it was strong, takao says Dranzer is crying about how it was abandoned and here where things get more interesting, kyouju talks about how it's the team bond that makes the strength and everyone uses the only beast to defeat black Dranzer. Kai is then stranded on a piece of sinking ice and is shocked by the loss and refuses to jump, his teammates then try to help him and that's when Kai realises something, despite insulting them, betraying them and almost taking thier holy beasts, his teammates were still there for him and he finally changes his ways.
Spencer battle
During the finals of the world tournament, Kai faces spencer and loses the first round, his grandfather returns and gives him black Suzaku and Kai must face a choice: use the strong power which he promised never to use again, breaking his teammates trust in him or using the weaker beast and have a higher chance of losing.
Kai then turns down this power, this shows that Kai has changed and he wants to battle with his and Suzakus strength and when Kai lost he was still happy.
Season 2
In this season kai talks more and interacts more, he is the one who understands things such as Takaos bond with Seiryu and goes through a traumatic stage
PTSD
During the beginning of v force Kai meets a fan called yuuya (I believe that's his name), yuuya  wants Kai to notice him as a blader and uses a cyber Dranzer which leads him to go Insane and die, Kai feels upset about it as he thinks it's his fault for not recognising him and giving him the cold shoulder.
Cyber Dranzer
During his battle with cyber Dranzer,Kai starts to suffer Post Trumatic Stress Disorder and hallucinates wyatt.
Kai performs badly and almost loses, he slowly gets over it and starts battling properly, this is big because this is the first time Kai is battling for someone else and after the battle he stares into the sky and smiles, I theorise he is smiling at wyatts spirit and the smile shows he's moving on
Losing Suzaku again
In his battle with Zeo, Kai loses Suzaku and quits beyblading, after hearing words of encouragement from Hiromi, he starts to understand that pouting won't do anything and he has to keep going.
Battle with Takao in world tournament finals
The first thing to point out is Kai battling Bryan and spencer before the battle, rei says its to even out the score as takao had already battled before that, this shows Kai will never give himself an advantage and has pride. After the battle ended in a draw and it was supposed to be like that Kai says that he's only here to battle Takaos and won't allow a draw, this shows that Kai doesn't enter the competitions for the title but to beat the holder of the title and after he loses he says he finally understands why takao wins, he says in the subs something along the lines of (not word for word) "now I get it, going after strong opponents and loving beyblading from his heart is what gives Takao his strength" showing Kai understands beyblading
Kai's downfall
Kai suffers a devastating lost to Brooklyn and loses conciousness for a few days but soon recovers and challenges Brooklyn to a rematch. This is where Kai faces his toughest challenge yet but even though Brooklyn is more powerful then him and is being beaten brutally, Kai still refuses to give up, it was one of those lessons you learn that no matter how strong the opposition is, never give in. Kai wins but supposedly dies, it was his last word in the subs "everyone in this beybattle, I sacrificed everything I had, isn't that true? Right Kinomiya?" This explains 2 things, takao and Kai truly understood eachother here and is shown when takao stops rei and max from stopping the battle and is shown crying, and in this battle Kai put everything on the line here his life, his holy beasts life and his blade showing kai isn't as selfish as we thought and in the final battle it's Kai who encourages takao and says to takao to follow the path we believe in despite the outcome, this also taught me and other viewers this as well.
Thank you for reading and have a great day. Also what do you think of Kai? Is he your favourite? Do you think he's overrated? Was he the hottest character ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)? And did what did you think of his downfall to Broolyn
Great essay once again hah. Just a few remarks:
- In the manga, it was clear that the decision to leave the (family) company to focus on Beyblades was entirely equal to leaving the family. Yes Souichirou was there to physically hold Kai, but Kai's father was clearly conscious that he was turning his back to everyone in his family, even his wife, when he took the decision to go for Beyblades. From that point on, Kai hated Beyblades and wanted to destroy every last one of them because they had taken his father away from him, so probably hoping that after there were no tops left, his father would return? is rather sad that he never appeared again in the manga story though.

- You forgot to mention an important sequence from right after Kai's defeat to Brooklyn. You cannot just skip through a period where he wandered the streets and alleys and seemed to have lost any purpose in life or something hah. I think that he had overall never felt so hopeless as when Brooklyn did King of Darkness the first time.
You missed out the very end of V Force and all of the first half of G Rev. Other than that it was good.
The essay was pretty good. It does describe how Kai has changed from hating Beyblades to being a passionate blader and it's also interesting to see the relationship between Kai and his team (particularly Takao).

I do also admire that both Takao and Kai end up defeating Brooklyn (supposedly their strongest oppenent) which does show how equal Takao and Kai's skills are. It's really why I consider Takao and Kai to have the best rivalry out of all the Beyblade series

Kai? Overrated? Nah, (if we're only talking about the protagonist's main rivals) that title goes to Ryuuga honestly because with Kai, he is a far more interesting character as there was a backstory which explains why he acts like a jerk which is very interesting. I also find Kai's character development to be much better and the fact that Kai would occasionally lose does give him an oppotunity to learn from his mistakes and improve as a blader.

Ryuuga on the other hand, the writers never really tell us why he joined Dark Nebula or why he associated with Daidouji (if someone has an explaination, please tell me). He was just there to dominate bladers because reasons. I guess he does develop into a more genuine blader around Baku or 4D where he would train himself but it doesn't really progress as well as Kai's development as Ryuuga was already a very powerful blader. I guess I will say that he does become more aware as time goes on and does seem to worry more about Kenta and even entrusts him with the power near the end but it felt like it was done in the last minute. I'm not saying Ryuuga is a bad character but he is overrated and isn't as well fleshed out as Kai.
Technically the match between Takao and Brooklyn is undecided though, there is no winner because at least Takao made him understand that it did not matter, it was not the end of the world.
Yeah but really though it's probably Tyson.
