I basically told the camera "hey, I need need you to lower the amount of light you take in, which is why I am lowering your ISO. I also would like you to keep your shutter open longer to allow for more light to come in, which is why I am making the exposure value go up. That way you will capture all the light the laser pointer makes, but the light won't be too intense."

Pretty cool stuff. I've done a few photos of cars like that, it's cool.

Yeah, it´s only an adjustment like zoom or everything, but no editing after the picture was taken. I´d count that.

More like the settings, but same thing really.

Regarding Nano's entry;

I know that there was some discussion through private messaging regarding the validness of his photo and I will say that it will be allowed as an eligible entry because long-exposure photography is more-so a technique rather than an edit. Additionally, the way he actually managed to take the photo required effort on his behalf so he should not be asked to retake an entry.

So yeah, long story short, Nano's entry is valid and will be considered for this round.

By the way, judges/host, some photography techniques look like edits but that's just the way the photographer manipulates the camera settings to get the desired look. Photography is a delicate art and not everything that doesn't look like a basic picture should be immediately labelled as "OMG EDITED!!1!1!111" XD

New rule (sarabscientist agreed to it so no arguing about the new rule) added to the OP!

Nano's entry will count because he did it before the rule was made and I don't want anymore controversy.

Remember, slight cropping or zooming or tilting is fine but nothing past the point of where the photograph crosses that margin and into the zone where it may appear edited.

Modes

If I am not allowed to change any settings on the camera, how am I supposed to get a good shot? You use different settings and modes to achieve a good shot. Otherwise it might be way too overexposed or underexposed.
There are different modes for focusing too.

Just trying to clear things up, since I want to get the best shot possible while staying within the rules.

It's fine to use a professional Camera, just don't use the effects, etc.

The point of the contest is about getting good creative photos without editing, using special effects ect.

I used a focus effect on my photo. You definitely need to specify the limits a bit more I think.

Some people like to use settings on their camera to be more creative, so ...

But nobody has clarified what "special effects" means.
There is no mode on my camera that makes it do what I did. I had to change multiple settings for it to work. Am I still allowed to change settings?

I agree with you a thousand and two percent.
The rules need to be clear in order to prevent confusion. And what I did was me trying to be creative without using any effects.

I'm not a fan of this rule at all... This is a photography contest. If you've got a nice camera, why should you be restricted from using it or its settings? It would be like restricting the participants of the GFX competition from using advanced editing software like PS5 or effects/tools unique to that program just because not everybody has the same options available to them.

Settings on a camera are additional tools available to those who may need them. Flash is a setting, but how can you restrict that?

EDIT: Maybe just specify no aftereffects?

The focusing effect is fine.

: the rule was made so that ppl with cameras with modes and effects don't have an unfair advantage.

A simple rule that state no post processing/aftereffects is all that is really needed. Since this is a clear rule, unlike the current one.
And as I saw before, I use the same mode for everything. From my super simple shots, to a bit more complicated ones. It's still the same mode. Light is still being processed the same way as any other shot I take, so I see no problem with long exposures.

I totally agree with you. Using every possible effect of a camera is also a part of creative photography. You don't change anything after taking the photo. With this rule it's rather a just-find-a-good-motive-contest than a real photography contest...

Alternate modes and adjusted settings on the camera are allowed while taking the picture but you must provide a brief run down of the process you used. Aftereffects, like filters and graphic editing are not allowed whatsoever.

Sound reasonably fair to everyone?

On another note, I'm kinda curious what the judges will be looking for in the photos. This could help give the participants a better idea f what to add in their photos for the judges liking. I suppose not saying would make us try harder though haha .

I mention what they will be judged on a few pages back
